Smoke in her Eyes by Anna Belfrage {Book Blog Tour with Review}

Smoke In Her Eyes by Anna Belfrage

Publication Date: March 15, 2019
Timelight Press
eBook & Paperback; 352 Pages
Series: The Wanderer, Book Two
Genre: Romance/Erotica/Paranormal
Six months ago, Helle Madsen would have described herself as normal. Now she no longer knows if that terms applies, not after her entire life has been turned upside down by the reappearance of not one, but two, men from her very, very distant past. Helle Madsen never believed in mumbo-jumbo stuff like reincarnation—until she came face to face with Jason Morris, a man who purportedly had spent fifty lives looking for her. Coping with being reunited with the lover from her ancient past was one thing. Having Sam Woolf, her vindictive nemesis from that same ancient past join the party was a bit too much. Suddenly, Helle finds herself the reluctant heroine of a far-flung, time-transcending epic story, one in which pain and loss seem to play a very big part. This time round, Jason and Helle are determined to make it to the happily ever after. Unfortunately, Sam Woolf will stop at nothing to crush them. That ride into the golden sunset seems awfully far away at times…

Amazon | Barnes and Noble | IndieBound

This novel is just another example of why I am completely in love with Anna Belfrage's writing. She knows how to grip her readers from the very first lines she writes. Her characters are well developed and the story-line is original and so suspenseful.

Helle Madsen met Jason Morris six months ago and immediately felt drawn to him. They fell in love fast but this isn't the first time they've been in love, and Helle has had the ride of her life. Remembering little snip its from the past over the last six months have made Helle realize her and Jason are soulmates who have been in love for centuries. Coping with this along with the evil Sam Woolf who can't let Helle and Jason be happy is enough to drive her mad. However, her turmoil isn't quite over yet. Juliet a woman from Jason's past won't let him forget how much she loves him and when she is in a brutal accident she does her best to break Helle and Jason's bond.

“Mostly I remember all the quiet moments—you know, when you’re just together but you don’t need to talk, you don’t even need to touch, because you’re so aware of each other that you don’t know where your hand ends and his takes over.”
A love saga that spans centuries, this second installment of The Wanderer books is intense, passionate and beyond riveting. You will surely fall in love with Helle and Jason, just as I did.

About the Author

Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with three absorbing interests: history and writing. Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga, set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy which is set in 14th century England. (Medieval knight was also high on Anna’s list of potential professions. Yet another disappointment…) With Jason and Helle, Anna has stepped out of her historical comfort zone and has loved doing so. My Rating:

Life begins at thirty-eight for Long Island mom and writer Luna Lampanelli, when she kicks her secretly gay husband to the curb. She’s got her freedom, but what she wants is love.
Luna knows she doesn’t need a man to exist, but try telling that to her heart. Against the advice of Sunny, her snarky best friend, and Jiminy, the cautioning voice in Luna’s head that just won’t shut up, Luna sets course to find a mate.
Luna speed and on-line dates her way into several short-lived, surreal relationships. There’s Ari, the humorless Israeli who refuses to assimilate – to America, and to humanity. There’s Alex, the young and handsome ex-crackhead who informs Luna he doesn’t want to be monogamous while they’re in bed. There’s Memphis, the wild-eyed sadomasochist. There’s Red, angry and crippled, who becomes the catalyst for Luna to join Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous.
But before Luna can proceed to recovery, she meets the elusive but oh so appealing Trip. He’s emotionally unavailable and has the Madonna-Whore Complex, but how can Luna (aka “whore”) let him go when she enjoys his dry wit so much, and his naked body even more?
Humorously haunting and packed with unspeakable truths, Luna Rising follows a woman’s funny and heart-breaking struggle to relate with un-relatable men and an un-relatable world, and to figure out something even more un-relatable: herself.

I always make sure I read Selene's books as soon as they come out. I almost missed this one but luckily I was still able to get an early copy. I am so glad I did. I absolutely loved it as I knew I would. Selene's writing style never fails to impress me. She sucks me in from the beginning. This novel was a bit different than the ones I've read before but she still delivers a great story and even some funny quips along the way.

Selene creates an interesting character in Luna Lampanelli, an almost-40-something mom who finds herself without a man after separating from her husband (who has kept the fact that he's gay a secret since before the wedding bells and after the birth of their two boys.) Luna is not a typical women's-fiction heroine. Though she's funny and smart, she's also deeply damaged. Her father was a heroine addict who left her in the hands of her narcissistic mother. Thus, Luna's obsessive desire for love is understandable, but her pursuit of it can be frustrating as she falls for one unsuitable man after another. You will find yourself shouting at her many times during the story "No, not him" "Stop the madness". Even with all this, Luna is still an enduring character that hooks the reader in.

LUna kept seeking companionship over and over and just kept failing miserably each time. A funny part of the story is that she had an "inside voice" that desperately kept trying to teach her right from wrong although she rarely listened. I think many of us have been in LUna's shoes one time or another. Picking the wrong relationsips, going for the wrong guys, etc. It is exciting to see where Luna ends up when everything is said and done.

I would highly recommend this new novel by Selene Castrovilla. She continues to be a favorite of mine.

Book #3 in the Bennett Family Series: Pippa and Eric

Eric Callahan is a powerful man, and his sharp business sense has earned him the nickname ‘the shark.’ Yet under the strict façade is a man who loves his daughter and would do anything for her. When he and his daughter move to San Francisco for three months, he has one thing in mind: expanding his business on the West Coast. As a widower, Eric is not looking for love. He focuses on his company, and his daughter.

Until he meets Pippa Bennett. She captivates him from the moment he sets eyes on her, and what starts as unintentional flirting soon spirals into something neither of them can control.

Pippa Bennett knows she should stay away from Eric Callahan. After going through a rough divorce, she doesn’t trust men anymore. But something about Eric just draws her in. He has a body made for sin and a sense of humor that matches hers. Not to mention that seeing how adorable he is with his daughter melts Pippa’s walls one by one.

The chemistry between them is undeniable, but the connection that grows deeper every day that has both of them wondering if love might be within their reach.

When it’s time for Eric and his daughter to head back home, will he give up on the woman who has captured his heart, or will he do everything in his power to remain by her side?

Pippa Bennett has been a fun loving character in all of the Bennett's brothers book, but getting to know her was beyond exhilarating. I just fell in love with Pippa right from the beginning of this book. She's one of the older Bennett children and is usually the one found taking care of others, but who will ever take care of her? Pippa is funny, affectionate and easy to love but she isn't confident in herself because of her past.

Here is a woman who has been through a lot when it comes to love, married to man that never loved her and only wanted her money, she believes herself to be unlovable. She isn't sure love is meant for her even though her heart urns for happily ever after.

In walks the sexy, hot and tantalizing Eric Callahan and he is out to prove Pippa wrong. But Eric has his own demons when it comes to love and a beautiful daughter to raise which is his main focus besides his business. Will Eric be able to draw the line at flirting with Pippa or will his desires finally make him reckless in the matter of his heart? Eric is a hard nosed business man of a huge multi location jewelry business and he doesn't have time for love. He prides himself on being the "shark" in his work place and not letting matters of the heart get to him.

This was by far my favorite book in the Bennett series so far. All these books can be read as a standalone, although in my personal opinion you are MISSING OUT BIG TIME if you don't curl up and read the whole series. The Bennett family dynamics are incredible. Layla really brings each and every one of these stories to life for the reader. I can't get enough of this family or Layla Hagen's magnificent writing style.

From New York Times and USA Today Bestseller, Vi Keeland, comes a sexy new novel.

The first time I met Brody Easton was in the men’s locker room.
It was my first interview as a professional sportscaster.
The famed quarterback decided to bare all.
And by all, I don’t mean he told me any of his secrets.
No. The arrogant ass decided to drop his towel, just as I asked the first question. On camera.
The Super Bowl MVP quickly adopted a new hobby—screwing with me.
When I pushed back, he shifted from wanting to screw with me, to wanting to screw me.
But I don’t date players.
And it’s not because I’m one of the few women working in the world of professional football.
I’d date an athlete.
It’s the other kind of player I don’t date.
You know the type. Good looking, strong, cocky, always looking to get laid.

Brody Easton was the ultimate player.
Every woman wanted to be the one to change him.
But the truth was, all he needed was a girl worth changing for.
Turned out, I was that girl.
Simple right?
Let’s face it. It never is.
There’s a story between once upon a time and happily ever after…
And this one is ours.

"Relax. I'm joking. Dinner means dinner. You know, I take you out to some overpriced restaurant where we share a meal and I tell you how great I am."
"See," he said when Siselee had gone. "I'm making you laugh. And you think I'm hot. This is a great courtship. I don't know what you're talking about."
"That's an oddly sweet statement."
"I'm an oddly sweet kinda guy. Now shut up and kiss me."

This book was popping up super frequently around social media a few weeks ago, and the synopsis and teaser quotes made this sound right up my alley. A fun sports romance? Sign me up. And you know, for the first chunk of the book, The Baller was totally living up to my expectations. But then I hit a point, around halfway through, where the whole thing started feeling kind of...meh. And from then on, the book never really built back up to a point where I was LOVING it--it was just okay.

The main characters were cool. Delilah is a snarky sports reporter who refuses to take any crap from the hotshot QB. Brody is a star football player who loves to tease. They both have shadows in their pasts, and in the beginning, that was an interesting aspect. I liked reading their points of view and learning about them while trying to unravel exactly what had happened. And both of the characters are very likeable--it is not hard at all to get in their corner and start rooting for them, both separately to face their issues and together to be the amazing couple they are clearly meant to be. But, again, once I got to a certain point about halfway through it began to lose its shine.

The romance in particular was great. I loved Brody and Delilah as a couple. I enjoyed reading them and wanted them to be together. Plus, if you're looking for steam, these two have definitely got it. So they really cover all the bases in that regard.

As far as plot goes, however, I think that's partly where this book lost me. The writing factored in, too. Because when I reached that point about halfway through, something was revealed about one of their pasts that took me out of how much I was liking the story. I knew, I just KNEW, what would happen. How it would go downhill, how that would annoy me. And even though I wasn't to the part where it was happening yet, I was already gearing up for it. I was right, of course. And I didn't like it. I also did not like how the dual POV I was enjoying so much (as I ALWAYS do, because dual POV is my jam) stretched to include another point of narration, of someone I was not a fan of and did not want to even be there let alone read from.

Then there's the simple fact that I found this book kind of forgettable. It was fun in the beginning, but then it went downhill and I stopped caring so much. I read it anyway, parts that I disliked and all, but then I put the book down and was like... *shrug* Honestly, as I was reading it I felt the same way. That's probably the best way to describe my feelings about this book in general--with a shrug. It was okay. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it, it's just a book I read.

Overall, The Baller started out great, but that only lasted for about half of the novel. I wasn't too fond of the second half, and as a whole, this book was forgettable. I'm kind of the black sheep on this, though, because I've seen so many people raving about it. Personally, I didn't find it to be very special. Or addictive. Or anything of the sort. But if you're interested in checking this one out, maybe read a few more reviews to get a more broad idea of whether or not this book will work for you. Just because it wasn't my cup of tea doesn't necessarily mean it won't be yours.

Guest Post

My name is Shana Vanterpool, and I was lucky enough to be a part of Jessica's wonderful book world to do a guest post for her Indie Author Spotlight. Thank you for having me Jessica! I'm going to talk about my debut release, My Sweet Demise, a steamy emotional new-adult contemporary romance that pushes the limits on trust and intimacy, how I came to write for the new-adult genre, and what it means to me and my writing.

My Sweet Demise isn't my first novel. For a long time I was submerged in the young-adult world. I devoured it, lived in it, and breathed it. I also wrote it, but after many failed attempts to get published I tapered off and started reading more. I tended to write more darker reads, pushing limits I wasn't sure were appreciated at the time. And then I discovered a new world about older characters that involved sex and emotion that young-adult did not possess. New-Adult. A strange intriguing intoxicating new world. I fell in love swiftly, not looking back once. There were no boundaries, no rules. There was nothing stopping the characters from falling and loving, from discovering who they were and living.

So I tried and wrote my first new-adult novel, testing myself. I knew how far my characters would go, having pushed them before, but how far would I go? I discovered fairly quickly that I opened a whole new can of worms inside of myself. I found a space in this writing world that called to me like nothing else ever had. Writing about love from the YA perspective was sweet, moving, and lasting. But writing from it from a NA perspective proved to be more rewarding. It was consuming watching two human beings come together, pushing them, feeling them push back, and believing in the world I created. I found my place and discovered what I'd been missing.

I don't write about perfect couples. People are imperfect. One persons actions and hurts are not another's, and each individual character garners a different response. I have a things for bad boys who want more, and heroines who are willing to look past what others can't see and find something special. There is beauty in the darkest places. There is love within your fears, and sometimes the harder paths in life turn out to be the most rewarding.

My Sweet Demise is a perfect example of this. Kent Nicholson and Raina O'Connor come together like gas and fire. They explode, and within their explosion they find their selves, struggling with trust and hurt and emotions they forbid themselves to have. Their intimacy was a wild ride to write about. Trust is an issue we all struggle with, but for others it can be a dilapidating hindrance. Healing can almost be as hard as the fall.

I wanted to find out what happened when you took a damaged man and a damaged girl who struggled with trust and put them together. I wanted to find out how far they'd hold on to their fears before they let them go. How hard were they willing to fight for the happiness their pasts told them they couldn't have?

My Sweet Demise is sexy, dark, painful, damaging ... and sweet.

About My Sweet Demise

My Sweet Demise (Demise, #1)
Amazon | Amazon UK | B&N | Goodreads
Desperation makes a girl do crazy things…

When twenty-one year old Raina O’Connor is kicked out of her room on short notice, she’s thrown into a frantic search for a new place to stay. As the situation becomes more urgent, her choices have dwindled to her least favorite option—ladies’ man, Kent Nicholson.

Kent Nicholson loves women, just not as a roommate…

When a gorgeous blonde with big hazel eyes answers Kent’s ad for a roommate, his red flags start flying. He’s looking for a wingman, not a chick who will put a damper on his game or drench his apartment in pink. It’s clear she’s in a bind, and something about her makes him break his own rules. But when he reluctantly accepts, it’s with four concrete conditions.

Be his wingman. Don’t get in his way with other girls. No bitchy attitudes. And most importantly, she can’t fall for him.

Pretty sure this was the world’s worst idea—ever…

Trust is something earned. Raina learned that the hard way when her father broke her heart as a child, making it easy to steer clear of relationships. But living with Kent somehow stirs emotions Raina has always forbidden herself to have. Plus, he’s everything she never wanted—untrustworthy, pigheaded…and gorgeous. Something tells her Kent isn’t free of his own secret scars…

Love can drag you down and spit you out, and be worth every second.

From the moment Lev Leokov spots the young woman hiding behind her hair in the middle of the gentleman's club, he can't take his eyes off of her.
For the very first time in his life, he is affected. Having been told his entire life that he can't process or understand emotion, he considers it a big deal.

When Mina Harris gets caught red-handed with a wallet that isn't hers, she falls apart. She's tired, lonely and hasn't eaten in days.

Lev offers her an ultimatum... A nice warm bed, a hot meal and a job, or the cops.

Mina takes her chances with Lev.
After all, a person with nothing has nothing left to lose.

"They say penguins mate for life." He reached up again and jerked hard at his tie. "ANd I want to be your penguin."
"I'll be a good father to them. I pray that our babies will be like you but if they are like me, I don't want you to worry because I'll guide them and show them they are loved even if they don't understand what that means. I will teach them."
He kissed me softly once, twice, three times, then whispered against my lips, "I love you, Mina."

Since Lev released, I have been seeing it everywhere. People talking about it, enjoying it. Quotes that made ME want to pick it up. So when I clicked on it recently and saw it was available on Kindle Unlimited (which it hadn't been at first, so this was a lovely surprise!), I snatched this baby up. And dear goodness, I am glad I did. Lev is a sweet story that I enjoyed immensely from start to finish.

So we have Lev, this guy who isn't really in tune to emotions. He doesn't experience many, and he's terrible at picking up what other people are feeling. He does his best, but there's a huge disconnect for him. Personally, I LOVE characters like this. They're fascinating, and often tend to have these huge sweet sides just waiting to be uncovered. (My favorite example of this is Corrado from Made by J.M. Darhower, but that's a discussion for another day.) Lev in particular is a big sweetheart, and being inside his head was one of my favorite parts of this novel. Very protective of his family, very kind and fair. He does have a dark side, too, but he doesn't unleash that on his loved ones.

Then we have Mina, a destitute girl living on the streets. Sleeping in alleys, eating scraps when and if she finds them. Her life is ugly and unhappy and no good. Desperate for a way to buy food, she slips into a random place (which ends up being the club Lev's family owns and runs) and attempts to steal a wallet. She only takes one hundred dollars and plans to put the rest back, because all she really wants is something to eat since she's starving, but Lev catches her. Turns out the wallet she stole was his brother's. But because Lev is an awesome person and took notice of the fact that she was seriously in need of help and obviously a good person, seeing as she'd left A LOT of money in that wallet and only took what she needed, he offers to help her out. He gives her a job at the club and a place to stay, and then the story goes from there.

Mina was a good heroine. Definitely a fitting counterpart to Lev. She starts out more meek, but gradually gains confidence. Her growth was great. Spending time in her head was also interesting. Not AS wonderful as it was seeing Lev's thoughts, but Mina's narration was certainly entertaining. Seeing Lev from her eyes was important and helped give an even better grasp of him as a person. Knowing Lev from inside his own thoughts is one thing, but viewing him through the eyes of someone else was super helpful in giving a full picture of him.

There was loads to swoon over in this story. Lev and Mina are the best couple, and seeing them together rocked. But it was also awesome watching them get to that point. They start out as strangers, then get to know each other and their relationship grows. I adore these two and experiencing that evolution with them was another of my favorite things about this novel. That, and just the plain fact that I swooned all over the freaking place. I love when that happens!

This is the first Belle Aurora book I've read, so I didn't know what to expect as far as writing went. Would be good? Just okay? Meh? My hopes had been kind of high, because the story seemed so up my alley and I wanted to like it. Luckily, the writing was well done. It is dual POV (for the most part), and both Lev and Mina had very distinct voices. Plus, both their narrations held my attention. Neither of them were boring. I was partial to Lev, but the odds were really in his favor because he's the hero and he's the TYPE of hero that I just die for every time. But Mina was cool, too, honestly. So yay for that!

The only little issue I had with this story was that it didn't seem to have much of an overarching plot. Don't get me wrong, this book drew me in and kept me reading from the first page to the last. I was amused, entertained, in love, all that fun stuff, the entire time. BUT. It seemed like there was a bunch of stuff happening, and the only thing that really connected them was that they were happening to these characters. There was no big conflict tying it all together or anything. Which I guess just means that this story was solely meant to be the story of Lev and Mina, a fact I can accept and am okay with, but still. I have to acknowledge this.

Oh, and I also wouldn't have minded more Lev chapters. I'm not counting this against the book at all, just reiterating my obvious love and adoration for Lev.

Overall, Lev was a sweet and captivating novel I absolutely devoured. I loved Lev and Mina, and experiencing their story was lovely. This may have been my first Belle Aurora book, but after enjoying Lev to the end of the earth, I will without a doubt be reading more of her work.
