Blog Tour: Fire & Flood by Victoria Scott (Interview + Giveaway)

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming author Victoria Scott to the blog as part of a blog tour for her novel, Fire & Flood. We also have an awesome giveaway for you guys, so after reading the interview and checking out Fire & Flood be sure to scroll down and enter!

1) How would you describe FIRE & FLOOD to those who haven't heard of it yet?

FIRE & FLOOD is the story of a teen girl who enters a dangerous race across jungle, mountain, sea, and desert to try and win the Cure for her sick brother. The only help she’s allowed comes in the form of a genetically-engineered animal called a Pandora.

2) Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind it?

I read a really great thriller and wanted to pack as much action into one of my own stories. Also, I wanted to write a story that included animals. ;)

3) What were the challenges in bringing this story to life? Did you have to do any research for your book?

I actually had to do a lot of research for the ecosystems, and a bit on genetic engineering. I watched a lot of Man vs. Wild so I could properly equip Guy Chambers with know-how.

4) Tella, the lead protagonist in your novel, sounds like a brave and kick-ass girl. For those of us excited to meet her, could you tell us a bit more about her?

She is someone who truly embraces her femininity. She also is brave when she needs to be, but only after acknowledging real fear. Tella is someone who has no business in a dangerous race, really, and yet she finds a way to persevere for her brother.

5) Is there a scene in FIRE & FLOOD that you consider your favorite one?

Without giving too much away—when Tella’s Pandora hatches.

6) What are some of your literary inspirations? Favorite books/authors?

I would say Kiersten White and Rachel Hawkins have both showed me how to write a serious story with a healthy dose of snark and humor. They’re amazingly talented.

7) Do you ever experience writer's block? If so, how do you deal with it?

I definitely have days when I don’t feel inspired. My answer is always to push through anyway. You can always revise later, but you have to keep writing regardless of what you’re putting down. Plus, you never know what the day will bring once you get started.

8) What books are on your 2014 to-be-read pile?

Ooh, I just bought CRUEL BEAUTY and A LOVELY, WICKED FOLLY. Also, I plan to buy UNINVITED and FRAGILE SPIRITS next! So many greats releasing this year.

A modern day thrill ride, where a teen girl and her animal companion must participate in a breathtaking race to save her brother's life—and her own.

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she's helpless to change anything.

Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race.

The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place?
