Post-Traumatic Brazilian Wax Syndrome By: Tamara Lyon Pages: 348 Published: May 29, 2015
Bristow Sparks, an interior designer in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, has just landed the contract of a lifetime, working for the Cherry Wyeland, volatile reality star and CEO of Wine-A- Lot. Designing for a crazy person is an around-the-clock commitment. It frays Bristow’s nerves and forces her to compromise in unimaginable ways, but, given that the finished product will be featured on The Decorating Network, she must succeed. While her professional life is hot, her personal life is barely room temperature. After surviving the relentless media spotlight because of a personal tragedy and a traitorous ex- boyfriend, Bristow flies so far under the radar she can’t even be detected. A homebody to the core, she binges on episodes of the Showtime series, Dexter, lives in sweatpants, and is addicted to exercise and Oreos. As for relationships? She has fallen hard and fast for witty and adventurous Jack Hoffmann. However, after their disastrous first date where Bristow collides with a park bench among other mortifying mishaps, they are unfortunately just friends. At least there’s one male sharing her bed, even if it’s only Vegas, her theatrical golden retriever. For her twenty-ninth birthday, Bristow goes out of her comfort zone and gets a makeover at an elite spa. Post-Brazilian wax and in excruciating pain, Bristow realizes that she’s been in a post-traumatic state for years. She vows to start taking risks again. When she finally goes after what and whom she wants, no matter the cost, tragedy strikes again . . .
For those of you who are blissfully ignorant as to what a Brazilian wax is, allow me to enlighten you. All of the pubic hair is removed, or, in more accurate terms, wrenched out by the roots through a barbaric, insidious waxing process. Sounds like fun, right?
I'm proud of you for being frugal. But, honey--she shakes her finger at me--sometimes you should just get exactly what you want no matter what it costs.
Don't judge me. I'm aware that this isn't a healthy way to deal with stress And, yes, I remember the stupid promise to myself about not eating anymore of these things after it ripped my guts to shreds and forced me to secretively far in my closet. But on a day where poop ends up on my face, I slice my nipple, and I discover my cousin's idiot husband robbed me of a hundred grand--I get a free pass.
This book is so laugh out loud hilarious with real life characters that you just can't help to fall in love with.
As women, we know just how painful it an be to impress a guy, or even to look good on a regular basis for us. We wax, shave, pluck, tighten etc just so we can leave our house feeling good about ourselves. However, the main character in this book, Bristow doesn't really care about all this stuff as she is DONE with men. Her ex boyfriend Asshat (Chad) pretty much wrecked her life or so she thinks. Bristow and her family are still recovering from the tragic death of her dad (although her great grandma Gigi believes he is alive and speaking to her daily) and Bristow is still recovering from the media frenzy that occurred a few years back when her boyfriend, that would be the Asshat or Chad wrote extremely private and damaging information about her and sold it to the tabloids. So if Bristow is a bit shy and weary when it comes to dating, she has a really good excuse.
Bristow is funny, down to earth and so flipping REAL, it is hard for the reader to not instantly love her. I mean she hides in a closet when Jack comes over so she can fart!
Speaking of the gorgeous and sweet Jack, this is the same guy that she's been fantasizing about meeting since she saw him at spin class with his bike helmet. Jack is the complete package for Bristow. He's funny, light hearted, down to earth and he even shows up to her family celebration of her birthday even though they just officially met.
I am unable to say enough good things about this heart warming, hilarious and down right outrageous story. It has romance, loveable characters and roll on the floor funny scenes. Tamara Lyon does such a great job telling this story that I couldn't help to get caught up in Bristow's life. I've read this author's other books a few years back and they were very well written but THIS ONE just blew my mind.
I give this book an enthusiastic five stars and hope that each of you pick this book up and begin reading immediately!!
