Where to get:
When Emma Anderson arrived at San Francisco International Airport, she regretted accepting the distinction of being the maid of honor to Gaby’s—her childhood friend—wedding. It had been years since the last time she set foot in Menlo Park, where her parents had been killed. The rug where she had been shoving her feelings since that day looked bumpier than a camel’s hump. Who could blame her; if she hadn’t been selfish they’d still be around. Ever since that fateful day, Emma has been perfecting the knack of Getting By.
Cade’s wedding in Menlo Park—a city close to San Francisco—might be the perfect place for Jake Knight to shake the memories of his ex, Emma Anderson for good. Single, available women galore for an entire week was the perfect medication, one he intended to take three times a day for an entire week to return to his player days. It was a plan the former spy thought flawless until he came face to face with the maid of honor. Jake’s perfect retreat turns into a flight, fight or hide week of celebrations
"Three months ago I ruined the little piece of ordinary life I had. I, no one else, ended it. Another set of memories and feelings I chose not to grieve upon. Reality sucks, get a grip and pull yourself together. Under the rug, remember?"
Yet I lived in my own hell and kept carrying the guilt of knowing that those men depended on me to see them through another day and I failed them. What could I do for a family, if I couldn't save seven grown trained men from hell? There wasn't anything I could offer Emma, and she didn't want to be saved by me. I had to follow her lead and let her go, as she did me. Before heading for bed, I opened my phone and checked my album where pictures of me and Emma were conveniently saved to remind me of those times I had been alive. Liam was right, that girl brought me back, and without her I was dead.
Back when I was eighteen, I exchanged alcohol for guns and women for the thrill of becoming a hero. The lighthearted boy who once cohabited my body, died soon after that. Who I became went through life ignoring the blissful impressions others talk about. Family mattered; I had one, no need to extend it. Adding a wife and children would only add to the burden of more loved ones that I could lose. Those people I shared so much with died without a second thought.
Getting By tells the story of two very lost souls. Jake and Emma met two years ago by accident in an elevator . They both felt a spark that they just couldn't ignore but Emma quickly told him that if it was meant to be, they would meet again. So ensues Jake popping up everywhere Emma is. Stalkerish or fate? You decide but this couple is complicated, electric and so much fun to read about. Finally they decide to start an affair. No emotions, just amazing sex. Unfortunately, Emma wakes up one morning and decides she's finished and tells Jake to leave his key with the bellman and walks out while he is still in a sleep slumber.
Fast forward to a few months later and both find themselves attending a wedding. Emma is the maid of honor and Jake is the close cousin of the groom. Neither has any idea the other will be there. When Jake realizes Emma will be there, he is beside himself. He has no idea how to get through the weekend without getting lost in Emma once more. The girl left him, how can he be around her?
This is a tender, heartwarming story about what happens when two people are so meant for each other but they are the last ones to know. Constant denial, past hurts continuously get in the way. Will these two ever find there way back to each other?
The extra stories surrounding the main story are just as good and juicy as the main story being told. The supporting characters, such as Jake's parents and brothers play a pivotal role in this couple's story and they all play their parts really well. The story is well put together and told with such passion that it becomes extremely hard for the reader to let go in order to live normal life.
This is my second book by Claudia Y. Burgoa and I am an avid fan. She is able to weave such passion and heartbreak into her stories. She writes the protaganists in a way that lets the reader know what they must be going through and she makes the secondary characters just as loveable. I find her books captivating and I am so ready for the next book in this series. Please release it soon!!
