Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

Rachel Hawkins' delightful spin-off brings the same wit and charm as theNew York Times best-selling Hex Hall series. Get ready for more magic, mystery and romance!
(Goodreads)

“Killing a vampire is actually a lot easier than you’d think. I know movies and TV make it look really hard, like if you don’t hit the right spot, it won’t work. Bit the truth is, those are just rumors spread by vampire hunters to make themselves seem tougher.”
“But capturing a vampire? Yea, that’s a little bit tougher.”
“Despite the stupid hair and the silly name and the flowing white shirt, he looked every bit the terrifying monster.”
“I guess getting bent and twisted through the spacetime continuum isn’t exactly good for you.”
“And you, my lovely Isolde, would either be exsanguinated on what I can only guess was truly dreadful carpet, or the bride of the undead.” He narrowed his eyes. “Neither fate suits you. Or me for that matter.”
“One of the weirdest things about using the Iternis is how it feels. There’s no rushing wind or sense of motion, but a crippling, sickening pressure, as though the weight of the whole universe is pressing down on you.”

I liked this book a lot. It was a little difficult to get into at first but then again, it’s the first book in the series. The first book in a series is rarely the best one, because it takes a while for the author to build up the world, plot, and characters. However, it was so nice diving back into the world that Rachel Hawkins has already created through her Hex Hall series. I loved the Hex Hall series so much and it was so nice seeing that world again! The good news is you do not have to read the Hex Hall series before you read this series. You can go in blind and you wouldn’t have missed a thing. I loved that about this book. (But I am also not saying that you shouldn’t read the Hex Hall series because you SO should! :)

Izzy Brannick fights monsters. I remember her from the Hex Hall series and it was awesome to get to know her. I am so happy that Rachel Hawkins is now writing a series on the Brannicks because let’s face it, they kick ass. They are firey redheaded ass kickers and who doesn’t love that? What I really loved was not only getting to know Izzy but getting to know her mother Aislinn. In the Hex Hall series, I wasn’t too sure how I felt about Aislinn. But in here, I understood her more. Yes, she is protective and yes, maybe at times a little too much. But I now understand why she is the way she is. She’s just a loving mother who does the best she can with what she’s been given.

I really liked the storyline within School Spirits. It was light yet at the same time keeps you intrigued and wanting more. Izzy’s sister you find out is missing and that really takes a toll on both Izzy and Aislinn. Izzy always thought that her mother gave up on looking for her, but when she finds out that she was still looking, it put Izzy a little more at ease.

I liked Izzy as of now, but I think that throughout the rest of this series, I will like her even more. I think that this was a great start to a series I know will be awesome. I cannot wait until the next installment comes out! I will definitely keep on with this series. And you should too. It’s light yet exciting at the same time. Definitely exactly what I was looking for at this time. If you like ass-kicking heroines or anything to deal with the paranormal, you should most definitely give this book a shot!
