The Raven Boys Read Along: 2nd Discussion

Hi guys! Welcome to the 2nd discussion for our July Read Along: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater! Huge thank you to everyone who joined us for chapters 1-23 a couple weeks ago! So excited to discuss (or flail over) the end together!

About the Book

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
Series: The Raven Cycle #1
Published: September 18, 2012 by Scholastic Press
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Find it: Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound
"There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before.

Discussion Questions

1) How surprising was the truth about Noah? Did you see it coming--did it completely floor you? Did you have any other suspicions about him? And after the reveal, did you notice what his first line in the book was?!

2) Noah and Blue have something of a friendship. What do you think of it? Did you like it? Do you think it'll change later, and if so how?

3) What's your current opinion on the romantic aspects? Do you have a ship? Are you hoping for more of a certain pair?

4) Whelk was always shady, but did you suspect just how deep it went? Were you surprised at that reveal? And do you feel any sympathy for what happened to him, or think another way of handling it would have been better?

5) Adam's situation at home was terrible, but what did you think of how that turned out? Particularly Ronan's part in it?

6) Adam's sacrifice. What do you think of what he did? How do you think it'll affect him later?

7) Were you surprised when Blue's mom let her go along with the boys--and then joined in helping them herself? Had you guessed that her mom knew what was going on?

8) Did you have a favorite character? Who was it and why? Also, did you have a favorite PART of the book as a whole? Which part? Why?

9) The last line. RONAN. Did his announcement at the end make things click for you--specifically about the title of book 2? (Did you gasp and then laugh? Jessica did.)

10) There's loads of hype surrounding this book and series. Did The Raven Boys live up to that? Did you enjoy the book as a whole? And do you plan to continue on to the next book, and maybe, possibly, the rest of the series? If so, do you have any predictions about what may happen next? If not, what about this novel did not work for you?

Please leave your answers in the comment section below and don't forget to respond to other comments so we can have an amazing discussion! We'll be checking in and responding as well  :)

However, please only reference things in The Raven BoysYou may make guesses or speculations as to what happens in the next book(s) (or, if you've already read them, what you thought would happen when you finished The Raven Boys), but do not spoil it for those who may have not yet moved on. (Seriously, Jessica is only JUST starting The Dream Thieves and is really pumped about it. Don't dull the fun, pretty please.) :)

    Our Favorite Quotes

He smiled tolerantly at her. Rubbing his smooth chin with its recently assassinated chin hairs, he studied her. She barely came up to Ronan's shoulder, but she was every bit as big as he, every bit as present. Gansey had a sense of incredible rightness, then, with everyone assembled by the Pig. Like Blue, not the ley line, was the missing piece that he'd been needing all these years, like the search for Glendower wasn't truly underway until she was a part of it.
He strode over to the ruined church. This, Blue had discovered, was how Gansey got places --- striding. Walking was for ordinary people.
"Out of the blue?" Calla asked.
"I'd prefer if you didn't use that expression," Blue said.
"His name wasn't really Butternut, was it?" Gansey asked Adam in a low voice.
"I didn't say it was possible," Gansey replied, not looking up from his splint. "I just said that was what I would like."
She tried to imagine being Gansey, seeing the warehouse for the first time, deciding it would be a great place to live, but she couldn't picture it. No more than she could imagine looking at the Pig and deciding it was a great car to drive, or Ronan and thinking he was a good friend to have. But somehow, it worked, because she loved the apartment, and Ronan was starting to grow on her, and the car...
Well, the car she could still live without.
Ronan, taking in Blue's posture and Gansey below, observed, "If you spit, Blue, it would land right in his eye."
If I'd been anybody else in the world, she thought, this would've been my first kiss.
"I don't mean to interrupt. But in either three or seven minutes," Persephone said, "Blue's raven boys are going to pull down the street and sit in front of the house while they try to find a way to convince her to sneak out with them."
"Well," said Ronan, "I hope he likes it. I've pulled a muscle."
Gansey scoffed, "Doing what? You were standing watch."

The Raven Boys Read Along: 1st Discussion

Hi guys! Welcome to the 1st discussion for our July Read Along: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater! Huge thank you to everyone who joined us and read chapters 1-23 on time to meet up with us and discuss them (or rather swoon over them) together!

    Discussion Questions

    1) For as long as she can remember, Blue has known that if she were to “kiss her true love, he would die.” Do you think it was fair of Blue’s family to tell her this prophecy? Would you want to know a prophecy about yourself that would drastically change your life?

    2) How would you feel if you were Blue and lived in a house full of physic women and your gift was just to "make things louder" for them? How do you think she really feels about this?

    3) Blue spends every St. Mark’s Eve on the ley line, helping her mother record the names of the people that will die the following year. What would you do if you were Blue and knew which people in your town would die in the next twelve months?

    4) Legend says that the person who wakes Glendower is granted a wish. What would you wish for?

    5) The story is being told is 3rd person POV, between a few characters. How is this--and Maggie's writing style in general--working for you? Any specific character you want to spend more time in the head of? Anything you particularly love/hate about the way writing?

    6) What do you think of Gansey's search for Glendower so far? How do you foresee this going in the second half of the book?

    7) Do you have any ideas about what's going on between Ronan and his brother? Or with Ronan, in general? There's obviously a secret--any guesses? And do you think things will ever get better between the brothers?

    8) How do you think Barrington Whelk is going to play into the story? He's up to something. Any ideas on what, specifically?

    9) What did you think of Blue's first interaction with Gansey, at Nino's? And then when Blue met Adam? Ronan?

    10) Going in, the romantic aspects looked pretty straightforward--Gansey would be Blue's true love. But things are already seeming complicated. Are you hoping for anything in regards to romance? Do you have a ship yet, or are you unable to choose yet?

Please leave your answers in the comment section below and don't forget to respond to other comments so we can have an amazing discussion! We'll be checking in and responding as well  :)

However, please only reference things that happen in chapters 1-23You may make guesses or speculations as to what happens in the second half (or, if you've already read ahead, what you thought would happen when you finished these chapters), but do not spoil it for those who may have not yet finished the book.

      Our Favorite Quotes
"There's only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark's Eve, Blue. Either you're his true love," Neeve said, "or you killed him."
Outside, a midnight bird cried, high and piercing. The little replica of Henrietta was eerie in the half-light, the die-cast cars parked on the streets appearing as though they had just paused. Gansey always thought that, after dark, it felt like anything could happen. At night, Henrietta felt like magic, and at night, magic felt like it might be a terrible thing.
Oh no. Not him. All this time she'd been wondering how Gansey might die and it turned out she was going to strangle him.
Blue didn't reply. She wasn't interested in telling other people's futures. She was interested in going out and finding her own.
"Fate," Blue replied, glowering at her mother, "is a very weighty word to throw around before breakfast."
Maura flipped her hands. Blue knew the gesture well. Her mother had used it to end many an argument after she'd delivered a winning line. Only this time the winning line had been delivered by a bowl of cran-grape juice, and Blue had no idea what it meant.
Mornings were a sport. One that Blue liked to think she was getting better at.
Gansey had once told Adam that he was afraid most people didn't know how to handle Ronan. What he meant by this was that he was worried that one day someone would fall on Ronan and cut themselves.
"Because I'm not pretty. Not in the way that Aglionby boys seem to like."

"I go to Aglionby," Adam said.

Adam did not seem to go to Aglionby like other boys went to Aglionby.

"I think you're pretty," he said.

      The Blog Most Likely To…

Last year, around this time, I posted my review for Huntley Fitzpatrick's My Life Next Door. Words cannot express (or I guess they can since it's a review) how much I loved this novel! When I found out Huntley was writing a sequel / companion featuring Tim and Alice, I was ecstatic! I loved these two characters (though it did take me a bit of time to warm up to Tim) and I cannot wait to read more about the Garretts, especially Jase *swoon* and Samantha.

In honor of The Boy Most Likely To's upcoming release (August 18), Penguin is hosting a few fun summer activities to celebrate! The first campaign is "The Blog Most Likely To . . ." where participating blogs create a superlative for themselves. Our first superlative is:

The Blog Most Likely To Help You Dominate Your TBR Pile

2015 TBR Pile Reading Challenge Update

      Hi guys and gals!

So the original plan for the 2015 TBR Pile Reading Challenge was really pretty on paper, but not so much in practice. We've heard your cries, your pleas, and your (nicely put) demands! Also, we've given ourselves a headache trying to keep everything straight  :)  So we're going to revamp the challenge a little bit for the remainder of the year
      • Sign ups are reopened and will remain open. If you signed up back in December or during one of the wrap ups you do not need to sign up again. This sign up is for individuals who have missed their sign up opportunities and still want to participate in the challenge.
      • Instead of two giveaways, each wrap-up will consist of a giveaway designated by that month's host.
Anything else? I think these were the two biggest issues / changes we've encountered, but we also want to hear from you! What's working? What's not working? What would you like to see more / less of regarding this challenge?

While we're not going to implement too many changes for 2015, we want to make sure you guys are heard and we'll see what we can do for 2016's challenge!

      Challenge Guidelines (Updated)
      1. The challenged will run from January 1, 2015 - December 31, 2015. The sign up link below will remain open for the remainder of the year.
      2. Anyone can enter! You don't have to be a blogger, just as long as you review the book you've read. You can review on your book on your blog, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Goodreads, etc.
      3. Any genre, length, or format of book counts as long as it is a book that's been sitting on your self for some time. Short stories and novellas do count! The only stipulations that the book must have been released in 2014 or earlier. No 2015 ARCs or 2015 fresh-off-the-press releases allowed.
      4. On the 25th of every other month (see schedule below), we will post a wrap-up for the previous two months. These posts will be done by one our bloggers and will contain a linky for you to add your own wrap-up posts and / or reviews.
      5. To help you tackle your TBR piles we will also be hosting Read Alongs on months that do not have wrap-ups (see schedule below). Voted on by challenge participants, Read Alongs will have two post dates: the first half of the book and the second half. Please note: You do not have to take part in our Read Alongs  to participate in the TBR Pile Challenge. You can participate in all of them, some of them, or none of them. This aspect of the challenge is entirely optional.
      6. You don't have to follow Bookish to join the challenge, but you do have to follow us to be entered in the giveaways that are posted with the bi-monthly warp-ups.

      Great Read Along: 2nd Discussion

Hi guys! Welcome to the 1st discussion for our May Read Along: Great by Sara Benincasa! Huge thank you to everyone who joined us for chapters 1-7 a few weeks ago! We cannot wait to discuss (or rather swoon over it) the end of this book together!

      About the Book

      Great by Sara Benincasa
      Series: Standalone
Published: April 8, 2014 by HarperTeen
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Realistic Fiction, LGBT, Retelling
Find it: Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound
In Sara Benincasa's contemporary retelling of The Great Gatsby, a teenage girl becomes entangled in the drama of a Hamptons social circle, only to be implicated in a tragedy that shakes the summer community.

      Everyone loves a good scandal.

Naomi Rye usually dreads spending the summer with her socialite mother in East Hampton. This year is no different. She sticks out like a sore thumb among the teenagers who have been summering (a verb only the very rich use) together for years. But Naomi finds herself captivated by her mysterious next-door neighbor, Jacinta. Jacinta has her own reason for drawing close to Naomi-to meet the beautiful and untouchable Delilah Fairweather. But Jacinta's carefully constructed world is hiding something huge, a secret that could undo everything. And Naomi must decide how far she is willing to be pulled into this web of lies and deception before she is unable to escape.

Based on a beloved classic and steeped in Sara Benincasa's darkly comic voice, Great has all the drama, glitz, and romance with a terrific modern (and scandalous) twist to enthrall readers.

      Discussion Questions

      1) What are your thoughts regarding the ending? If you've read The Great Gatsby, did you like the change?

      2) Do you think Naomi was changed by the events over the summer? Not just what happened with her peers, but also with her mother?

      3) Would you have posted the video or would you have just let things lie?

      4) Did you find Great predictable?

      5) Do you think you would've enjoyed it more / less if you hadn't read The Great Gatsby or do you think you would've enjoyed it more / less if you had read it?

Please leave your answers in the comment section below and don't forget to respond to other comments so we can have an amazing discussion! We'll be checking in and responding as well  :)

I tried to call Skags a couple of times, but either side couldn't talk more than a few minutes or she didn't pick up the phone. I guess I could've tried hard to call Skags, or at least to text back and forth, but it seems like something else was always coming up - a clambake, or a day at the village spa with Jacinta and Delilah, or a long bike ride with Jeff. Usually I spent all summer wishing I were back in Chicago, but at some point that summer I stopped thinking about home.
"We're all snobs, honey," she said. "I just say it's how I was raised."

"It's not how I was raised," I said.

"Sure," Olivia said. "You're here, at this fabulous party, with these fabulous people, all of us looking fabulous in white drinking the same wine and eating the same food, listening to the same hired band in the same backyard of the same mansion - and you're different?" She laughed a nasty little laugh. "Sure you are."
At this, Teddy's expression darkened considerably. Whatever ground he'd gain was lost the moment Jacinta's hand touched his girlfriend's forearm. His hulking body tensed. I don't think it was the touch that angered him, per se - it was the clear evidence that theirs was a world from which he was barred entry. It was fine if other people couldn't get between his girlfriend and this superman blogger, but he should always be assured his place.

        Never too late to join!

However, please only reference things that happen in the first half of the bookYou may make guesses or speculations as to what happens in the second half (or, if you've already read ahead, what you thought would happen when you finished these chapters), but do not spoil it for those who may have not yet finished the book.

          Our Favorite Quotes
My dad didn't take it so hard because, as he told me the day Mom left, "She's not the person I married, anyway. I don't even know who she is." Since he's a good guy, he added, "She does love you, you know. And you love her, too." But she never stops buzzing around long enough for me to get a good look at who she really is, so I can't decide if I love her or just feel like I ought to. She imprisons me in East Hampton each summer, because the court says she can and because I don't have any real reason to refuse, except that I really, really don't like her.
"She's not a hooker. She's just - she's a nice girl who happens to me come a very stupid wold. And I kind of feel bad for her about the cheating thing - Jef said everybody in town knows.

"You've always been a Delilah Fairweather apologist. Every summer you call me up and tell me the dumb stuff she does and says, and every summer I'm like, "This girl sounds like an empty shell of a human being,' and you're like, "No she's nice, its the other kids who suck.' Someone has a girl crush.
This summer was getting do by the day. Since when did I happily and comfortably swill champagne with the sons and daughters of America's finest families? I started to analyze the previous evening the way I always do the morning after a party, but I stopped after a few seconds. Maybe it was my hangover. Or maybe it was something else - a conviction that I was going to do things differently this summer. Maybe I didn't need to overthink everything.
