Kill the beast. Win the girl.

A strange beast stirs fear in the kingdom of Lochlanach, terrorizing towns with its brutality and hunger. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity understands her duty to the kingdom though it pains her to imagine marrying a stranger. It would be foolish to set her sights on any particular man in the great hunt, but when a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention, there’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not keen on marriage. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast and protecting his family—yet Princess Aerity continues to challenge his notions with her unpredictability and charm. But as past secrets collide with present desires, dire choices threaten everything Paxton holds dear.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale, “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, outlawed magic, and a princess willing to risk all to save her people.

About My Life in September
This month was all about coming out of the closet. And by that I mean my Amazon Closet of Doom, filled up to the ceiling with Amazon products sent to me for review. I am getting this under control - finally! You can expect way more product reviews and exciting contests filled with cool prizes!

We had a great time with my in-laws. We met many times and it was really super fun. As Tori is getting older, she enjoys spending time with people and she absolutely loves spending time with her grandparents :)

I started watching Fear The Walking Dead and it is freaking awesome!

About My Life in September
SCHOOL. The semester officially started at the end of last month, but this month brought on tons of work I had to do. I'm doing well, thank goodness, but it's still a tough balance between school stuff and everything else.

Texas Teen Book Fest! Ohmygosh, I had such a great time! I got to hang out with my friend Mary all day, and meet my friend Matt, and meet and chat with SO MANY fantastic authors---Morgan Matson, Sophie Jordan, Pierce Brown, and Suzanne Young, to name a few. This year's festival was organized way better than last year's, and I am just so completely happy and satisfied with how the day went. It was awesome!

Six of Crows signing! Leigh Bardugo and Julie Murphy had a signing at Book People, and I was lucky enough to attend. Leigh and Julie are hilarious, so that was wonderful. PLUS, I got to hang with some of my favorite bookish friends (Molly, Vilma, and Katie!), which was so much fun! And don't even get me started on how absolutely stunning the Six of Crows hardcover is. I mean... Black. Stained. Pages. 'Nuff said.

At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

We Were Liars Read Along: 2nd Discussion

Hi guys! Welcome to the 2nd discussion for our September Read Along: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart! Huge thank you to everyone who joined us and read chapters 1-43 a few weeks ago and to those who are here to discuss chapters 43-87!

About the Book

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Genre: Young Adult, Mystery, Realistic Fiction, Suspense

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

Discussion Questions

1) All the Liars come up with their own life motto. What would yours be?

2) Was the ending a surprise or did you see it coming?

3) Now that you've finished and probably had some time to digest the ending, what do you think: Hallucinations or ghosts?

4) Do you think the crime was successful in any way?

5) Liars is a first-person narrative, but that narrative includes fairy tales, hallucinatory episodes of violence and scenes that are repeated with new interpretations at different points in the story. Do you think this hinders Cady's reliability as a narrator?

Please leave your answers in the comment section below and don't forget to respond to other comments so we can have an amazing discussion! We'll be checking in and responding as well  :)

Our Favorite Quotes
I half expect the boys to unpack a picnic - they have a canvas bag with them - but instead Gat and Johnny begin climbing the rocks. They've done it before, I can tell. They're barefoot, and the climb to a high point twenty-five feet above the water, stopping on a ledge that hangs over the sea.

I watch them until they are settled. "What are you doing?"

"We are being very, very manly," Johnny calls back.
I will prove myself storng, when they think I am sick.

I will prove myself brave, when they think I am weak.
Gat was my love, my first and only. How could I let him go?

He was a person who couldn't fake a smile but smiled often. He wrapped my wrists in whtie gauze and believed wounds needed attention. He wrote on his hands and asked me my thoughts. His mind was restless, relentless. He didn't believe in God anymore and yet he still wished that God would help him.
I suffer migraines. I do not suffer fools.

I like a twist of meaning.

Murder.

Fire.

Revenge.

That’s all seventeen-year-old Alice Monroe thinks about. Committed to a mental ward at Savage Isle, Alice is haunted by memories of the fire that killed her boyfriend, Jason. A blaze her twin sister Cellie set. But when Chase, a mysterious, charismatic patient, agrees to help her seek vengeance, Alice begins to rethink everything. Writing out the story of her troubled past in a journal, she must confront hidden truths.

Is the one person she trusts only telling her half the story? Nothing is as it seems in this edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller from the debut author Emiko Jean.

(Goodreads)

I think he would cry out if he could. Silence always hurts more. I go to him, not sure of what to say or do. I want to absorb his rage. Take away his sadness. Smooth the scar on his face. Fix him.

But I don't know how. I couldn't even fix Cellie. I can't even fix myself.
I continued until the roar of the flames faded. I stopped four or five blocks away, when my legs refused to go any farther. I stumbled and fell, scratching my knees on the asphalt. Little rocks and dirt tore into my palms. I sat up slowly, leaning against a rickety fence. Fireworks still lit up the sky, but they were partially obscured by a huge black cloud of smoke. Sirens wailed, and someone shouted. From this distance, it sounded like they were yelling under water.
I smile. "You know you're kind of a sick bastard. You're into me because you dig 1950s pinup girls and I remind you of your sister?"

He smiled back. "Don't forget your dirty mouth and fascination with paper animals."

We'll Never Be Apart starts off hot - literally. We start the story from Cellie's point of view as she sets the fire that kills her sister's boyfriend and almost herself and Alice. We're then given the rest of the story for Alice's perspective. Alice doesn't remember anything about the fire other than Cellie set it and Jason died. And now she's ready for revenge.

As a form of recovery, Alice's doctor has given her a journal to record her memories in. She's to start from her earliest memory and go from there in hopes of gaining her memory back. I thought this to be a very interesting narration technique. They're like flashbacks, but not because Alice is currently writing them in her journal. And since she's writing them down, we get to see her reactions to her memories as she is regaining them.

While it's all told from Alice's point of view, her journal writing allowed for readers to get a feel for Cellie and Jason, while getting a deeper look into Alice's past. Alice and Cellie didn't have the best childhood and we see how that shaped their future and got them to the point in their lives that they're at now.

The characters are well done and kept at a minimum. Aside from Alice (and her journal versions of Callie and Jason) we have her roommate, Amelia; fellow patient, Chase; her social worker, Sara; a few other patients and hospital staff. By keeping the supporting characters to a minimum, Emiko can truly focus on Alice, her mental state, and the plot.

I don't think I would categorize this is a "psychological thriller" because there weren't moments where I was confused and desperate to know what was going on, nor was it fast paced. However, that being said, I did find myself wrapped up in this story. I read it in a day because part of me had to know if Alice was going to get Cellie (they're in different blocks with Cellie being in the most guarded and secluded) and if she was really going to get her revenge.

There are parts of the story that are a bit underdeveloped, but overall Emiko's writing is very well done. We'll Never Be Apart is Emiko's debut book and while it does have some issues (luckily nothing major) it also has some great strengths. All in all I enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading more from Emiko.

Interview with Emiko Jean

Hi, Emiko, and welcome to Bookish Lifestyle! First I just have to say how much I enjoyed We'll Never Be Apart. Your narrative kept those pages flipping and there are so many questions I have for you; however, since most of those questions are deep into spoiler territory I'll try to keep my questions a bit more basic and non-spoiler.

What was your inspiration for We'll Never Be Apart? How do you go from an entomologist, a candle maker, a florist, and a teacher to a YA psychological thriller author?

First, thanks so much for having me on your blog today!

When I graduated from college my undergrad work was in entomology and I spent a very short time working in that field. I love bugs, but I didn’t feel like it quite satisfied my creative drive so during that time I pursued other avenues like candle making and flower arranging :). Finally, I decided to go back to school and become a teacher (I’m from a long line of teachers, education is in my blood). Since the book sold I’ve left teaching. I really loved being a teacher but found balancing writing full-time and teaching full-time was almost impossible!

My first year teaching I worked at a school with a large population of foster kids. It was there the characters for We’ll Never Be Apart originally appeared to me, inspired by some of the foster kids I dealt with. In my head Alice and Cellie grew as characters taking on their own unique life story until I felt compelled to write it.

Alice and Cellie have two very distinct and different personalities. How did you jump back and forth between the two and ensure they remained two separate people?

I was able to do this fairly easily. Alice and Cellie’s lives are irrevocably intertwined because they are sisters and more so because they share a traumatic history. For me, the key to differentiating Alice and Cellie’s personalities was to examine their unique reactions to their traumatic event. Alice grew inward. I always imagined Alice with a kind of shell around her. Cellie on the other hand grew outward. Cellie’s grief couldn’t be contained and it manifested in a very messy, destructive way.

When you got the call/letter/email that you were going to be published, what were the next five minutes like?

It was really exciting! My agent called, asked if I was sitting down and said we had an initial offer from HMH. The phone call was during my planning time while I was teaching. I remember smiling from ear to ear. I called my husband (he was on another call and had to call me right back). So I paced my school parking lot waiting for him to phone me. When he did, I think he yelled more than I did. It was one of those big moments that imprints on you. I’ll always remember it!

What is your favorite psychological thriller?

Tough question! I get asked this a lot and it’s so hard to choose favorites. Recently I re-read Charm and Strange by Stephanie Kuehn, it is so brilliant and heart stopping and not for the faint of heart.

What's next in line for you? Are you working on a new book now?

Of course, I’m always writing. I have lots of stories rolling around in my noggin. My latest project is another thriller and that’s all I’m willing to say (don’t want to give away any spoilers just yet :) ).

Emiko Jean is an elementary school math teacher, whose work with children in foster care inspired her debut novel, We'll Never Be Apart. Aside from reading, writing, and teaching, Emiko is passionate about bugs. She can often be found in the remote forests of the Pacific Northwest, where she lives with her husband, hunting giant moths and cataloguing rare insect colonies. -

Amy Curry is not looking forward to her summer. Her mother decided to move across the country and now it's Amy's responsibility to get their car from California to Connecticut. The only problem is, since her father died in a car accident, she isn't ready to get behind the wheel. Enter Roger. An old family friend, he also has to make the cross-country trip - and has plenty of baggage of his own. The road home may be unfamiliar - especially with their friendship venturing into uncharted territory - but together, Amy and Roger will figure out how to map their way.

(Goodreads)

We'd taken the food to go, but when Roger struggled to take a bite of his burger while pulling out of the parking lot, it became clear that this was an eat, then drive situation, and he'd pulled back into the parking lot. I hadn't realized until Roger told me, after we'd ordered, that In-N-Out was a West Coast-only burger chain. There was no In-N-Out in Connecticut, because clearly that state was an inhospitable wasteland.
As soon as Roger steered the car toward Kansas, the landscape began to look much more Kansas-like, even though we were still in Colorado. Soon the mountains were gone, and everything was flatter, dry-looking, straw colored - and we had our big open skies back again. As expected, the land was very, very flat. But it was an expansiveness, a peacefulness to it, and I propped my feet on the dashboard, leaned my head back against the headrest, and just took in the scenery.
"I just . . . " I looked up at the sky for a moment, then pressed on. "I thought I was going to die," I said. "For one really long second during the accident, I thought it was all over. And then, obviously, I didn't, but . . . it was like I went the opposite way. Like I stopped living entirely, so I wouldn't have to feel anything again. Because feeling had led to it hurting so, so much . . . " My voice caught again, but I took a breath and continued saying these things I hadn't even realized until a second ago that I felt. "But since I've been out here, on this trip . . . it's like I've started to remember what it's like. To feel alive. To feel anything. And all I'm saying is that you never know how much time you have."
And as we slowed for just a breath, to a kiss that was sweeter and more lingering, I understood in a flash why, on the Greyhound sign, Arrivals and Departures were right next to each other. Because sometimes, like in that moment, they can mean exactly the same thing.

It took me a while to get through Amy & Roger's Epic Detour (a little over a week, according to Goodreads), but that wasn't because I didn't enjoy the book - that week just seemed to be extra busy and things got in the way. Amy & Roger's Epic Detour is simple, well, epic. Upon finishing it, I can easily consider it one of my favorite reads of 2015.

Amy's mother has planned a cross-country road trip for her and Roger (who will be spending the summer with is father in Pennyslvania) and has everything, including hotel bookings, meticulously planned. Of course, within minutes of meeting Roger and Amy decide to divert from her mother's itinerary. With Amy as navigator, the two set off on a road trip that, unbeknownst to them, will change their lives and give them both the closure they so desperately need.

I immediately liked both Amy and Roger. Something about their characters drags you in and holds tight. Whether it's Roger's perpetually upbeat attitude or Amy's struggle with the recent death of her father, you instantly care for both of them. Which is a good thing since you spend 90% of the story with just these two.

The amount of character growth is astounding - particularly in Amy. She starts off sort of shell-like, not that you can blame her, and through her adventures with Roger slowly becomes mentally and emotionally stronger. Roger doesn't go through a huge character growth, but through his trip with Amy he is able to find some answers he's been longing for and a sort of inner strength of his own.

The relationship between these two is wonderfully done. They'd been friend's as children, but due to one thing or another (despite their mothers keeping in touch), they haven't seen each other in years. There aren't too many awkward instances in the beginning, but nor is there any sexual tension. And while I love me some good sexual tension, it felt like a huge breath of fresh air to read a story where the characters aren't immediately dying to make out with another. There aren't any longing glances or lingering hands. Pure and simple, they're friends with a relationship the grows in, what can only be defined as, a realistic fashion.

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour is a story with characters that you both want more of and to leave it alone. It feels as if anything (aside from a cameo here and there in Morgan's other novels), would taint this beautiful story. The narration is amazing and Morgan does a wonderful job of getting readers in Amy's head and enraptured in the story. Even the minorist of minor characters standout and move both the story and character development along in wonderful ways.

This is an emotional story full of laughter, tears, romance, and growth. I found myself crying during specific scenes (and I wish I could touch on them in detail, but that would be too much of a spoiler), quickly followed by some of the biggest grins I'm sure I've ever broken out in. Morgan is a hugely talented writer who constantly hits you right in the gut with the widest range of emotions I've even gone through in one book. An absolute must read.

Downdrift by Sutton Shields is HERE!!! + Men of the Water Wars Series (++Giveaway)

If you know anything about me, you know how I love mermaids.  I love them the way some people love coffee or chocolate or air...  Okay, so we all need air but I NEED these books.  The first 3 have rocked my world (to the point they have been read several times).  I mean aren't they stunning?!

(Click on covers to head to the GR page)

Not only are they stunning, but they are packed with some of my favourite characters of all time.  The character are quirky, colourful, out there and completely unforgettable (they get this from their creator who is also amazing).  This is the series that I could stare my e-mail box down waiting to hear the next one is out, and stalk my mail box down waiting for it to get here.

Not too long ago I got an e-mail from Sutton letting me know she had the newest cover and that the book was out (HOW DID I MISS THIS??!!).  Beyond failing as one of Sutton's biggest fans I was in love all over again with the newest cover, and the synopsis has me doing grabby hands before it even makes it to my mailbox!

Marina Valentine is one future time-traveling trip away from putting the final trident in King Zale’s reign. The future, however, has a dire message for the Savior: She is one decision away from costing everyone everything.

Marina doesn’t want the burden of some unknown decision, nor does she want to learn of yet another sneaky trick by King Zale. All she wants to do is focus on her trip with Troy to retrieve the last soul stealing stone—a trip that will not only take them to wondrous, mysterious places, but will bring them closer than she ever dreamed possible.

Unfortunately for Marina Valentine, burdens and Zale tricks are part of the job description.

Only this time, the burden has never been heavier and the trick has never been more destructive.

Buy It:

What do you all think?  Do you not LOVE it?  I know I sure do and I am positive that I will love what is on the inside more.  Now onto something I LOVE!!! Sutton makes the best Guest Posts.  I seriously adore her and the personality  she gifts to her characters.  So I hope you enjoy the Men of her Water Wars Series....

Status? Single by choice
Romantic? I’ve had my moments
Biggest Turn-on? Anything a particular Fairhair princess does
Guilty Pleasure? Doing the opposite of what I’m told
What’d you dream about last night? Destruction.

Author Info

I'm a dreamer, believer in the unbelievable, and author of The Merworld Water Wars series: FINNED (Wave One), OVERFALLS (Wave Two), and RIFTED (Wave Three), with two more 'waves' to follow.
Hook (pun totally intended): "Take a fish-phobic girl, divide her by one hot merman, add a splash of his crazy ex-merbitch, and you get one stinky school year."
I'm a handbag-loving gal who LOVES to watch sports--football, baseball, basketball, NASCAR, you name it. I take being a fan very seriously. ;)
One thing I love most is trying to make people smile, even if it means making a fool out of myself (trust me, my inner idiot is bound to make multiple appearances).
I have a completely irrational fear of grasshoppers, worry that piranha may secretly lurk in lakes, and try to find the bright side in everything, even if I annoy myself doing so.

Find Sutton (trust me you want to)

*Note if you stop to read this you will gain giveaway entries.  What Sutton's author bio should read is:
Super amazing, beautiful on the inside and out, one of the sweetest most compassionate people you
will ever have the pleasure of meeting.  What I would like you to do is go to any of Sutton's social
media and if you haven't had the pleasure of meeting her, tell her how excited you are to meet a sweet
her.  If you have met her...  Well you can carry on for however long you like about how awesome she   is.

So because I LOVE these books so flipping hard, I am going to give away
either all 4 books in e-copy (amazon kindle only) to one winner (open to
everyone), or if youare from the US you can pick to have a PB copy of
Finned.  If you have read Finned and would like a different book in the
series... Well that's ok too.
GOOD LUCK!
