Musical Musings: Overlooked August

Musical Musings is a new feature where I'll be talking about music! There'll be two posts a month---the first of which will be about some random musical topic, and the second post of the month (like this one!) will be a recap of my month in music. To learn more about this feature and whatnot, click here to check out my introduction post! :)

This Month's Playlist

Like last month, I spent this month all over a Spotify playlist I made. This one is named Gansey---yes, because of The Raven Boys. (You can see my playlist here.) Unlike last month, this playlist is way more contained. And it's partly filled with songs I felt got overlooked last month. I'd added them to Shy because I loved them and was excited to hear them and sing along to them and whatnot, but then they got lost in the shuffle of the slew of other songs that ended up on the playlist as well.

Plus, there were quite a few songs I added to Shy around the end of July that I wanted to carry over into this month---like "Love the Way You Lie Part II" which I was suddenly in the mood to listen to on repeat again after months of not. I also fell completely into another phase of To Be Juliet's Secret addiction (which resulted in the first Musical Musings post this month), so I HAD to include a bunch of their songs in this playlist...and I even found a new favorite by them!

And there are more songs on Gansey that, as I said, I've just been really in the mood for but I felt got overlooked before. So I made a new playlist and listened on repeated shuffle to my heart's content. (Sort of. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be carrying over at least one or two of these songs into next month, even though they got all of August. I can't help it. When I get into something... well, I get INTO it.)

Top Nine Songs of the Month

Sound of a Heartbreak - To Be Juliet's Secret

I've been obsessed with this song ever since I realized its magnificence while I worked on my TBJS post earlier this month. Now it's my favorite song by this band, and I just adore it so much. The piano is beautiful, the words are beautiful, and AHHH HIS VOICE. Such a great song. *bashes in the repeat button*

You Are My Sunshine - Johnny Cash

Spotify does this thing now where they make you a playlist ever week (or something like that). Sometimes I give it attention, and sometimes I kind of forget it's there. Today, I made a point to go take a look at it, because Spotify can be darn smart. They suggest some cool stuff. And what do ya know, THIS SONG IS ON THAT PLAYLIST this week. I love Johnny Cash. His voice is so distinct and fantastic. I mean... he's JOHNNY CASH. And Johnny Cash singing this particular song? Dear baby goodness. My heart, y'all. My freaking HEART. Ahhh. New favorite. (I legit just paused in making this post to listen to this song the whole way through before moving on, because this song is that wow to me.)

Skinny Love - Birdy (cover)

Oh, this song. Definitely one I've been wanting to give attention that has accidentally gotten overlooked lately. I love it. I first heard this song on The Vampire Diaries, and I remember wishing I knew who the song was by and what it was. Like, YEARS ago. Then in this past season of The Voice, Brooke Adee used this song for her blind audition. I didn't pinpoint it as THE SONG right away, but I realized it was familiar. So then I searched it on the YouTube and listened to this version by Birdy and freaked out because THEN I realized and YAY FINALLY. I love finding stuff like that after so long of wondering and wanting. And this song is fabulous. Birdy's version is actually a cover (something I did not know until I looked at YouTube comments with people arguing over which is better--the actual answer: it's up to you, we all have different opinions), and I do enjoy the Bon Iver version. But due to the fact that this was the version in my mind for so long, and just because this is Birdy and I have come to really like her, I sort of prefer this version. Either way, this song is fabulous.

Riptide - Vance Joy

Hi, my name is Jessica and I was SO BEHIND on falling in love with this song. I remember when everyone was freaking out over it and I would sit there like "I've never heard it." Taylor Swift did a cover of it and everything and I STILL hadn't heard it. And then I started hearing it as 6 second covers in Vines (loooove those) and got curious, and I believe I also heard it on the radio a time or two, but finally I looked it up and listened to the full song and I need to slap myself for taking forever because I am head over heels for this song. I didn't just find it this month--I actually found it months before I started Musical Musings--but I was still way late on this. And I've been wanting to talk about it, but like "Skinny Love," it has gotten lost and overlooked in my shuffle. SO NOW HERE IT IS. I love it.

Touch the Sky - Kanye West

Hi, my name is Jessica and I actually really enjoy Kanye. I know loads of people don't like him, but I can't help it. Some of his songs just win me over. And this month I was just in the mood for this one. It's older, but oh well. Sometimes I think this is my favorite Kanye song, but then I think about "Otis" and "Jesus Walks" and "Good Life" and....yeah. I can't choose. I think he's one of the artists where it REALLY depends on my mood or what's on my mind. *shrugs* Love this song, though.

Pretty Hurts - Beyonce

I freaking LOVE Beyonce. She has some darn good songs and she can seriously sing. I adore her, and her music. This song was another one I heard in 6 second covers, and I got curious enough to look it up. Though, really, getting "curious enough" was not difficult because it's BEYONCE. Obviously I was going to look it up. And this song... is on. Point. Words and sound and impact... I am in love. *sings along forever*

You Could Be Happy - Snow Patrol

I have been very sadly overlooking Snow Patrol as of late. This band is fantastic. And this song is, too. It's sweet and sad and stunning. It's one that I always liked, but then the words sank in and now it hits me hard and I love it. And heck to the yes, I sing along. Every time. Lovely.

Love the Way You Lie (Part II) - Rihanna ft. Eminem

I'm pretty sure we've all heard Part I of this. That one is Eminem ft. Rihanna and was played about a zillion times around the summer of 2010. (I think. Somewhere around then.) And that one is great. I so enjoy it. As a person who freaking LOVES Eminem, of course I'm a fan of that song. But this. Part II. Y'all. Chills. Give me chills. I didn't know this existed until I was a senior in high school. And then I was obsessed with it for a while. Now it's a song that comes to mind sometimes and I listen to it about a hundred times to get it out of my system. That's what happened between the end of July and the beginning of August. It's why I started my Gansey playlist. Because I needed this song. On repeat. I love it. Especially Eminem's part, honestly. I feel like the whole thing is deep, in a disturbing way. And, again I say, I LOVE IT.

In One Ear - Cage the Elephant

First of all, I am such a fan of Cage the Elephant. Ever since forever and a half ago (I think around 2009? give or take a year) when I heard "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked," I've liked Cage the Elephant. Between then and now, my love for them has only grown. Exploded, really. I'm pretty much always happy to hear a song by them. And I get ECSTATIC when I hear a song of theirs on the radio. Total jackpot. This particular song is one I enjoy because they're telling off the jerks who throw hate their way. I LOVE THAT. Plus, this song is freaking catchy. So double win for CTE over here.

I don't really have much else to say this month! I've been kind of busy getting ready for the semester to start---and then, you know, STARTING. So my playlist has been with me the whole way, but not a huge amount of contemplating other stuff music-wise. I don't even know what direction I'm gonna go in next month. Maybe the actual radio? WHO KNOWS? We shall see. Until then, friends...

That's what my month in music was like! Now I'd LOVE to hear from you! What have you been into? Any new obsessions? Favorite songs? What do you think of the songs and artists I've been into? Let me know your thoughts! :)
