How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

About My Life In September
Joe and I had our Bridal Shower. I had such an amazing time seeing friends and family, a few I haven't seen in months since they live on the other side of the state or another state all together. Plus, it was the first big wedding event and just made everything much more real!

Accomplished a lot of little tasks I'd been putting off. Each weekend felt like it was super busy, but I got so many things accomplished this month. My to-do list just keeps getting smaller, of course it doesn't help that I also keep adding to it, but what can you do?

I read a book I thought I'd never read. Evie convinced me to read The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey after insisting to me that I should - she's rather convincing. I was a little hesitant because I don't like alien books. They freak me out. Especially alien apocalypse type books. They're too real/probable and *shudders*. But I did and . . . I loved it! I read it in one day. I'm hoping to start The Infinite Sea in a few weeks so I can suffer with everybody else while waiting for the third book, which doesn't even have a title yet!

Things I'm Looking Forward To In October
My bachelorette party. I'm very much in need for a girls night out and this sounds like the perfect excuse to have one  ;)

Halloween. I love Halloween so much! The movies, the vibes, the small children running around in their adorable costumes! The last two years here it's been cold and rainy, which has made for an awful turn out during trick-or-treating. Crossing my fingers that this year it'll be better!

Writing more discussion posts. I've been keeping a list of discussion posts over the last few months and I want to start working them into the blog more. So be on the look out for those!

Review:
At 21, Calla hasn’t done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should. She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends.

But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought she'd left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming.

Sexy and intense, Jax is in Calla’s business from the moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn’t give them her mom.

About My Life In September
Things got crazy busy with school. Seriously, it makes me so sad to look at the very tiny number of books I read this month. I really enjoyed all of those books, but I'm bummed I didn't get to more because NO TIME.

I met Molly McAdams! I am seriously still happy flailing about this. She is so nice and I love her books so much, and I am so glad I finally got the chance to meet her. And now I can't wait to see her again in March at Austin Book Fest!

Got my hands on some super exciting books! Namely Stay with Me by J. Lynn (which I've already read and loved all over) and Letting Go by Molly McAdams (which you bet your sweet goodness I'm currently reading). I've been pumped about these books for a while, so it's great to have them and read them and heart them!

Things I'm Looking Forward To In October
READING. I aim to read way more this month. Now that the first month of school is through, I've developed something of a routine. Hopefully, this means I'll fit more reading in. *fingers crossed*

Texas Teen Book Festival! This used to be called Austin Teen Book Festival. I've gone twice before and had a fabulous time on both occasions. This year, I'm excited to meet Sarah J. Maas! I've heard that she's, like, the nicest. And I'm hoping we can do a little JLA fangirling together.

Halloween and all the fun stuff that comes with it. I adore scary movies. All the marathons that are about to ensue make me feel all happy. I'll get jumpy after all this, but I don't care. It's fun!

THE WALKING DEAD! I cannotcannotcannot wait for The Walking Dead to come back. Feels like its been forever and a half since it was on, and I am totally in need of some Daryl. I'm going to watch their marathon of all the episodes and then flail my face off when the new season starts. Like, FINALLY.

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

Where to get:

Savannah has been kidnapped. By a man who claims he’s a Titan and she’s a Greek Goddess. It’s a little farfetched and she wishes it isn’t true but the evidence is piling up against her. Except, she doesn’t know who her Goddess is and no one will tell her.

Instead, Charlotte is happy to make her life a living hell and the friends she does make turn to enemies. And then there’s Aidan: the arrogant and mysterious King of the Gods. Savannah finds herself drawn to him despite her best efforts not to get involved with another guy. She doesn’t need this kind of trouble when her life is already upside down; being a Goddess is hard enough.

Driven by fate and a past she knows nothing about Savannah tries to navigate her new world as one of the Twelve Olympians. Is history going to repeat itself or will the New Olympians write their own myths?
(Goodreads)

"Normal? But they were Gods. Normal is... mortals. Abnormal is believing that Gods exist and can be normal."
"No, normal is the Gods.  Mortals were simply made in their image.  Who do you think was the original 'Bachlor' and the first 'Desperate Housewife'?  The mortals simply copied what their leaders showed them to be."
This is why I wanted to give boys up, this was why I didn't want to fall for another one of those charming, good looking bad boys who wanted nothing more from you than a little something to play with until they grew bored or got another toy.
People tried to fool themselves into thinking that how they felt about the other person could salvage what had been lost.  But before anything else, even love, trust had to be established with the other person.  How else were you supposed to give your heart and give into what you were feeling if you couldn't trust them.

I let this book sit for awhile after reading it.  Not because I didn't read it from start to finish, but because I needed proper time to digest it.  Needless to say, I am glad that I gave it time to turn around in my head.  The more I thought about it, the more that this read impressed me and I feel like it is one of the few books that the more I turn it over in my head, the more I am glad I had the chance to read it.  Castronaro created something mysteriously unique with Greek Mythology, something that surprised even me and has me wishing that I knew that little bit more.

Savannah's world is basically thrown right into craziness.  Everything she thought she knew is being twisted up and thrown through a chopper.  There was no real twist in her life that suggested she was different, or special and no warning that things were going to change.  Heck, even when they did change no one would really tell her what was going on.  She was taken to this exquisitely set up place, told it was Olympus and that she was something she had only heard in story books.  The plot itself was set at a steady pace, with characters that you will both love and loathe.  There is a lot of detail put into this book, and often it added to my ability to view what was going on.  However, there were a few times that I wished there was a little less detail and more movement, luckily this was not something that happened often and I found myself enjoying the majority of the story and pacing.

I want big things for Savannah.  She had a really rough start in this book, but I enjoyed her... A lot.  She was strong but not perfect.  There was no automatic belief that what she was being told was true, but at the same time there were many things that made it hard to deny. Not only this she was thrown around and lied to by just about everyone.  Maybe it was because of who she was, or maybe it's because this is a whole new ball game, but I felt so much anger for her.  At times I wished she would fight for herself, but once again I believe it was her inner goddess preventing anything different from happening.  What I learned while reading this, was that careful and calculated will pay off in the end.  Be it for good or for evil, it seems that rushing into anything does not pay off.

The romance in this one had me going up walls and wishing that this poor girl was not being jerked around.  It did not matter how hard Savannah tried, easy was not in the cards.  Sure Aiden had good moments and it seemed that he wanted to be true, but the truth was he was only there when he felt it best.  I can't even say I wanted her to trust him because I was too far gone in her ability to be her own person.  Aiden, did have potential though, if he weren't giving into his inner God so easily.  There is a balance that needs to be found and it took him some time to find it, and I can only hope that the balance that he did find stays. Not only for Savannah's sake but for for his own.  I have high hopes for his development, and possible future swoon sessions.

Ode to the Queen was something different and enjoyable.  I will undoubtedly pick up the next book when it releases.  There is so much potential for character development and a bunch of different ways that the story could go.  I was content with the stand that was made at the end and the true colors that came through.  I really did enjoy the mystery and journey that this book took me through.  Pick it up if you love mythology, and want something that will take you where no mythology has before.

p.s. Charlotte is a perfect freaking bitch.

She has spent her life fighting fate, and she thought she was succeeding. Until she woke up in a coffin.
Ushers die young. Ushers are cursed. Ushers can never leave their house, a house that haunts and is haunted, a house that almost seems to have a mind of its own. Madeline’s life—revealed through short bursts of memory—has hinged around her desperate plan to escape, to save herself and her brother. Her only chance lies in destroying the house.
In the end, can Madeline keep her own sanity and bring the house down? The Fall is a literary psychological thriller, reimagining Edgar Allan Poe’s classic The Fall of the House of Usher.

Interview

Welcome to Bookish, Bethany! I'm so excited to have you here with us today! After having devoured your Masque of the Red Death series, I was thrilled when I found out you were doing another Poe adaption. I have to admit that I haven't read The Fall of the House of Usher before so I know I'm in for a surprise!

You have this wonderful knack for writing thrillingly creepy stories. Why did you decided to adapt The Fall of the House of Usher? What was the inspiration behind it - aside from the Poe story that is?

The major inspiration for The Fall was to give Madeline Usher a voice. Up until now, she never had one, in fact some scholars thinks she didn’t even exist! When I first read The Fall of the House of Usher in middle school, the fact that she was buried alive stayed with me. And then later when we watched the movie, the part when she came out of her coffin…well that freaked me out even more.

But as an author what I wanted was to delve into Madeline’s story. The fact that she is buried alive within her story was just one more incentive to write it because as an author I’m drawn to characters who are trapped. And no one is more trapped that Madeline Usher.

Tell us about Madeline.

Madeline is cursed. Her mother prefers her brother Roderick and does everything possible to protect him (Madeline, the older twin, tries to protect him, too). She spends her childhood lost and ignored within the decaying house of Usher. She isn’t clear on what’s normal—not in human interactions, not in family issues, and not in living arrangements. She’s ill, she’s a bit mad, but she’s also determined and brave and smart.

I have to ask, do you have any plans to adapt more of Poe's stories? If so, which ones do you hope to rework for your readers?

Not at this time. Right now I’m working on something else entirely. The Fall actually includes homages to several other Poe stories, but I don’t have another Poe story in the works right now!

Having been previously published, does the awe of seeing your books on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Goodreads, etc. wear off?

Not really, I mean, I guess it’s like having children, I have a million baby pictures of my first and like 3 hours of video footage of his first year. With the second I have less video footage, but I also have better quality pictures? My responses (in snapping photos) was somewhat different, but not less enthusiastic. Each book is different, and seeing the cover and knowing people are reading it, is equally exciting, if different. Does that even make sense? ☺

Also, of all my books I have a really deep connection to The Fall, and I’ve waited longest to see it reach publication, so it’s something of a dream come true for me.

If you were magically transferred back in time and got to meet Edgar (you two would be on a first name basis), what would you talk about?

Cats? I know he had a tortoise shell cat, and I also have a tortoiseshell cat…however cats probably aren’t the most interesting topic of conversation. I think I’d probably have to ask him some questions about The Fall of the House of Usher, some questions about the illness, and about Madeline, etc. I could impress him with the fact that I can recite the first 5 stanzas of the Raven, but I always get the tapping and rapping mixed up, so that might not be the best ice-breaker.

To be honest I think I’d be extremely nervous during my hypothetical conversation with Poe. But I’d sure like to follow him around those last few nights and see what really happened/how he died.

If I was transported back in time to the Dark Ages, I'd . . . avoid all contact with the plague. I know a little bit about plagues.

I'm addicted to . . . the internet. But nothing useful, just wasting time. Also Pepsi.

If The Fall had a theme song it would be . . .  Plainsong by the Cure.

The last book I bought was . . .  Winterkill by Kate Boorman.

My go-to Edgar Allan Poe story is . . . The Fall of the House of Usher.

Thank you for taking time to answer my questions, Bethany! I cannot wait to delve into this book for myself. I've heard from a few sources that it is simply amazing.

Be sure to check back on October 5 for my review!

New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn returns with a Jazz Age tale of grand adventure...

On the verge of a stilted life as an aristocrat's wife, Poppy Hammond does the only sensible thing—she flees the chapel in her wedding gown. Assisted by the handsome curate who calls himself Sebastian Cantrip, she spirits away to her estranged father's quiet country village, pursued by the family she left in uproar. But when the dust of her broken engagement settles and Sebastian disappears under mysterious circumstances, Poppy discovers there is more to her hero than it seems.

With only her feisty lady's maid for company, Poppy secures employment and travels incognita—east across the seas, chasing a hunch and the whisper of clues. Danger abounds beneath the canopies of the silken city, and Poppy finds herself in the perilous sights of those who will stop at nothing to recover a fabled ancient treasure. Torn between allegiance to her kindly employer and a dashing, shadowy figure, Poppy will risk it all as she attempts to unravel a much larger plan—one that stretches to the very heart of the British government, and one that could endanger everything, and everyone, that she holds dear.

Picture it: it's the height of the 1920's era where everything is just beginning, there is so much history to see and be seen. Imagine growing up then. Imagine the adventures you could have. This book brought the 1920's era to life for me. Being that it is my favorite historical time period, I was quickly sucked into the pages of this beautifully written story.

It’s the 1920′s, an era when anything can and does happen. Poppy Hammond is set to walk down the aisle, when at the last minute she can’t do it. She can’t marry for money. On the run in her wedding gown, Poppy, with the help of handsome curate Sebastian Cantrip, heads for her father’s country estate. Sebastian disappears into thin air, and Poppy is left to deal with her angry relatives. To escape the heat, she secures a job overseas and with just her maid for company, sets sail for the Orient. There, she will find cut throats who will stop at nothing to possess and ancient and priceless treasure, including toppling governments and disposing of young ladies who know too much.

Poppy becomes desperate to find and thank Sebastian for his services, but alas it is just not to be.

But when she goes looking for Mr. Cantrip she finds that he's disappeared. Not only that, but it seems Sebastian Cantrip may not be the hero she had assumed him to be. Somehow believing Sebastian may be in danger, Poppy decides to take it upon herself to start a search for him. Her resourcefulness eventually leads her to Damscus where the mystery plot thickens and Poppy begins to wonder just what she's gotten herself into.

What soon follows is a great adventure involving a retired colonel, his handsome valet, a sinister contessa, her creepy son, spies and a search for ancient treasure in the great Syrian Desert.

Poppy is such a fun heroine. She is tough, funny, witty and strong enough to stand on her own two feet. She isn't the typical woman from the 1920's era but to me, that just made this book that much more fun.

The author's descriptions and little details bring the pages of this book alive for the reader. The plot is on point but the scenery plays a big role in the adventure as well. Deanna does such a great job at describing the time period, the scene and the characters.

Any reader can get caught up in this book and I think you should!
