Welcome to Bookish, May Nicole Abbey! Or do you two prefer Caroline and Shawnette?

Well, we are May Nicole Abbey

Fair enough!  :)  I'm so excited to have you two here with us today! How would you describe the story of The Pauper to those who haven't heard of it yet?

It is the third story in our Time-Travel Adventure series. Heather, a vibrant spunky 18th Century girl takes her destiny into her own hands and throws herself into the mysterious adventures of a dark, intriguing stranger. Ammon is on a desperate mission spanning the globe and millennia in order to save humanity. Together they dine with ancient Egyptian kings, journey through 18th Century Europe, escape a war, face pirates, uncover buried treasure, and even see modern day, but all that is nothing compared to the infuriating, poignant, combative, and reviving challenges they offer each other.

Though it is a complete story on its own and a stand-alone book, (we worked very hard to make sure of that!) those who have read The Dreamer and The Scholar, the first two books in the series, will recognize and enjoy certain characters and circumstances. Don’t worry. Nothing is repeated or re-hashed. But The Pauper links all three books together.

I love that all three of your books are, more or less, standalone but at the same time connect in one way or another - it really adds a certain element to each book. When did you two decide to write as a team under a pen name?

When we were young and naïve and fantasizing about one day being published! Haha. This was over ten years ago. First it was a castle in the clouds and neither of us really believed would come true. Then it was a hobby, and then it became our fixed goal.

Can't complain about it becoming a reality! I myself have read The Dreamer and find your characters wonderful. Having spent more time with each of your characters from all three books, if you could spend a day with one of them, who would you choose, where would you go, and what would you talk about?

OHH, this is a great question!! What food for thought. I think I still have a crush on Shepseskaf from The Scholar. **Swoon** My goodness, even thinking about him makes me all twitter-pated inside. I would love to go horseback riding with him and his magnificent horse Rabu. I would love to talk with him about things that really matter to him: the afterlife, his worldly treasures, his goals for the future. It would be wonderful to see him interact with others and really experience his charm first hand.

That sounds simply divine! The Fall Series is all about time travel so put yourself into the shoes of your time travelers, but with a bit more choosing power. If you could pick for yourself, would you rather jump forward into the future or go back in the past?

Caroline would love to go into the past where times were simpler… I would love to go into the past where times were more dangerous! Haha.

Yikes. I think I'm with Caroline on this! When it comes to writing your novels, what is the hardest line to write - the first or the last?

Are those my only options? Haha. Neither! The hardest part to write is the middle. The very middle is always a stumbling block where we have to remind ourselves why we are writing, what we are writing, and what our ultimate goals are. It is so easy to get off course. The first line is thrilling to write… and the last line is so fulfilling. But the middle – that is the kicker.

That makes sense. I personally think the first and last lines are the most powerful, but if the middle doesn't work, then who cares about those two lines! What are some of your literary inspirations? Favorite books/authors?

Is there a woman out there who does not love Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, or Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre? We also grew up reading Georgette Heyer, Mary Stuart, Mary Higgins Clark, and Mary Burchell. (Hm. A lot of Mary’s). Lately, because of our busy schedules, we read less so that we can write more. Neither of us read nearly as much as we once did… but we are able to, instead, create stories and characters of our own whom we love dearly.

Sounds like a fair trade off to me. For a bit more fun, finish the sentences below.

One time I spontaneously . . . struck up a conversation with a complete stranger on the streets of St. Louis, MO. and did it all in a British accent!

I'm addicted to . . . hokey made-for-tv movies. Joey Lawrence is a babe.

If I could live in any TV/movie/book universe, it would be . . . (what an awesome question! You really are making us ponder!) It would have to be a world of superheroes and superpowers… or something fantastic like that. A world where good is battling evil and there are a lot of noble and great characters who stand tall and brave no matter what. X-Men comes to mind… or Narnia… or The Avengers. Or maybe something of magic, but more subtle, the world does not know about it, like Stardust. Wherever it is, it would be a place full of adventure and excitement and gallant wonderful heroes.

If I could tell the world just one thing, it'd be . . . Read our books! Haha. J/K. Well, not really. Can you imagine if you ate something that tantalized your taste buds and filled your belly with pleasing satisfaction? We experience this and we want to share it with others. Does that sound weird? It does, a little, I know. Let me explain… Earlier when you asked if we preferred being addressed as May Nicole Abbey, or by our individual names, and I responded that we are May Nicole Abbey, the reason I said that is complicated. When we write, it is not my work. It is not my sister’s work. We are a small part of a larger thing. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We both feel so honored to be able to help create these fun stories, which we hope contain even just a little bit of truth and enjoyment for those that read them.(This is seriously one of the best answers ever!)

Last book I bought . . . What a Difference a Mom Makes by Kevin Leman

Thank you for stopping by, ladies! It was a pleasure talking to you. As for you, my dear readers, be sure to pick up your own copy of The Pauper and get ready to adventure through time.

Blog Tour: The Forbidden Library by Django Wexler (Spotlight + Giveaway)

Welcome to THE FORBIDDEN LIBRARY blog tour! In honor of Django Wexler’s new series, perfect for fans of Coraline, Inkheart, and The Books of Elsewhere, we’ve paired Django and fellow Penguin author Seth Fishman (The Well’s End) in a battle of wits! Each day for the next two weeks, Seth and Django will challenge each other to escape from popular story scenes in the most creative way. Follow along as the two try to outmatch each other and check out some cool interior art from THE FORBIDDEN LIBRARY along the way!

Django to Seth:

Who in The Well’s End cast would Gandalf choose to carry the One Ring to Mordor?

I suppose the entire point of a Hobbit carrying the Ring is that a) they have a strong ability to withstand its pull of ego/power and b) little/insignificant people can do BIG things. In The Well's End, those two points don't always coincide. I think a young Greg Kish is probably the best answer there. He’s motivated, driven, willing to spend years moving ahead with a vision and living in relative isolation, but just like Frodo, he’s not able to do it alone.

Then again, Jimmy might be a choice too. You might think of him as Boromir, or even Faramir (his more sophisticated brother) and know that a ‘human’ in LOTR could never carry the Ring, but I think Jimmy is as pure in heart and deed as any, despite his galumphing size.

The Forbidden Library Synopsis:

Alice always thought fairy tales had happy endings. That--along with everything else--changed the day she met her first fairy
When Alice's father goes down in a shipwreck, she is sent to live with her uncle Geryon--an uncle she's never heard of and knows nothing about. He lives in an enormous manor with a massive library that is off-limits to Alice. But then she meets a talking cat. And even for a rule-follower, when a talking cat sneaks you into a forbidden library and introduces you to an arrogant boy who dares you to open a book, it's hard to resist. Especially if you're a reader to begin with. Soon Alice finds herself INSIDE the book, and the only way out is to defeat the creature imprisoned within.
It seems her uncle is more than he says he is. But then so is Alice.

About Django Wexler: Django Wexler is the author of The Thousand Names. He lives near Seattle, Washington.

The Well’s End Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Mia Kish's small town of Fenton, Colorado is known for three things: being home to the world's tallest sycamore tree, the national chicken-thigh-eating contest and one of the ritziest boarding schools in the country, Westbrook Academy. But when emergency sirens start blaring and Westbrook is put on lockdown, quarantined and surrounded by soldiers who shoot first and ask questions later, Mia realizes she's only just beginning to discover what makes Fenton special.

And the answer is behind the wall of the Cave, aka Fenton Electronics, of which her father is the Director. Mia's dad has always been secretive about his work, allowing only that he's working for the government. But unless Mia's willing to let the whole town succumb to a strange illness that ages people years in a matter of hours, the end result death, she's got to break quarantine, escape the school grounds and outsmart armed soldiers to uncover the truth.

About Seth Fishman: Seth Fishman is a native of Midland, Texas (think Friday Night Lights), and a graduate of Princeton University and the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. He spends his days as a literary agent at The Gernert Company and his nights (and mornings) writing. He lives in Jersey City, New Jersey. This is his first novel (that's not in a drawer).

When Emma Anderson arrived at San Francisco International Airport, she regretted accepting the distinction of being the maid of honor to Gaby’s—her childhood friend—wedding. It had been years since the last time she set foot in Menlo Park, where her parents had been killed. The rug where she had been shoving her feelings since that day looked bumpier than a camel’s hump. Who could blame her; if she hadn’t been selfish they’d still be around. Ever since that fateful day, Emma has been perfecting the knack of Getting By.

Cade’s wedding in Menlo Park—a city close to San Francisco—might be the perfect place for Jake Knight to shake the memories of his ex, Emma Anderson for good. Single, available women galore for an entire week was the perfect medication, one he intended to take three times a day for an entire week to return to his player days. It was a plan the former spy thought flawless until he came face to face with the maid of honor. Jake’s perfect retreat turns into a flight, fight or hide week of celebrations

"Three months ago I ruined the little piece of ordinary life I had. I, no one else, ended it. Another set of memories and feelings I chose not to grieve upon. Reality sucks, get a grip and pull yourself together. Under the rug, remember?"
Yet I lived in my own hell and kept carrying the guilt of knowing that those men depended on me to see them through another day and I failed them. What could I do for a family, if I couldn't save seven grown trained men from hell? There wasn't anything I could offer Emma, and she didn't want to be saved by me. I had to follow her lead and let her go, as she did me. Before heading for bed, I opened my phone and checked my album where pictures of me and Emma were conveniently saved to remind me of those times I had been alive. Liam was right, that girl brought me back, and without her I was dead.
Back when I was eighteen, I exchanged alcohol for guns and women for the thrill of becoming a hero. The lighthearted boy who once cohabited my body, died soon after that. Who I became went through life ignoring the blissful impressions others talk about. Family mattered; I had one, no need to extend it. Adding a wife and children would only add to the burden of more loved ones that I could lose. Those people I shared so much with died without a second thought.

"The man was my past, and I had a future which involved cute and complicated and wouldn't be his."
Getting By tells the story of two very lost souls. Jake and Emma met two years ago by accident in an elevator . They both felt a spark that they just couldn't ignore but Emma quickly told him that if it was meant to be, they would meet again. So ensues Jake popping up everywhere Emma is. Stalkerish or fate? You decide but this couple is complicated, electric and so much fun to read about. Finally they decide to start an affair. No emotions, just amazing sex. Unfortunately, Emma wakes up one morning and decides she's finished and tells Jake to leave his key with the bellman and walks out while he is still in a sleep slumber.

Fast forward to a few months later and both find themselves attending a wedding. Emma is the maid of honor and Jake is the close cousin of the groom. Neither has any idea the other will be there. When Jake realizes Emma will be there, he is beside himself. He has no idea how to get through the weekend without getting lost in Emma once more. The girl left him, how can he be around her?

This is a tender, heartwarming story about what happens when two people are so meant for each other but they are the last ones to know. Constant denial, past hurts continuously get in the way. Will these two ever find there way back to each other?

The extra stories surrounding the main story are just as good and juicy as the main story being told. The supporting characters, such as Jake's parents and brothers play a pivotal role in this couple's story and they all play their parts really well. The story is well put together and told with such passion that it becomes extremely hard for the reader to let go in order to live normal life.

This is my second book by Claudia Y. Burgoa and I am an avid fan. She is able to weave such passion and heartbreak into her stories. She writes the protaganists in a way that lets the reader know what they must be going through and she makes the secondary characters just as loveable. I find her books captivating and I am so ready for the next book in this series. Please release it soon!!

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT:
Claudia lives in Colorado with her family and three dogs. Two beagles who believe they are human, and a bichon who thinks she’s a beagle. While managing life, she works as a CFO at a small IT Company. She’s a dreamer who enjoys music, laughter and a good story.

FORESIGHT, part one of the Guarded Secrets series Ilona has been in love with her unsuspecting best friend, when a dashing stranger explodes into her life. The sudden magnetic feeling frightens her. Will he break her heart, or will he bring true happiness? A sinister dark man appears, Ilona connects his presence with the series of mysterious deaths around her. She is an emergency room doctor, born into an ancient tribe which still exists hidden amongst us with its fiercely enforced rules. She doesn’t know much about her heritage besides legends and rituals that she continues out of respect for her parents. She begins to remember the forgotten instructions concealed as rhymes her mother was teaching her since she was a small child and discovers that she can rearrange the human body to its healthy state. This ability is exciting as well as frightening. She is conflicted between having confidence in her intelligence and inherited abilities while having no confidence as a woman. Her insecurity created barriers which keep others out, and I also keep her caged in. She has been evacuated from her easy and steady life, and is forced to face the unknown.

  Interesting Concept

Starting this read I was undeniably interested in the concept of just the name Hun.  We know the stories of Attila the Hun and I was curious to see where the author took this.  Turns out it has nothing to do with that Hun, or at least not yet.  Of course this is a paranormal read, but it is always interesting to hear a new take on different beliefs.  Szabo, did a wonderful job of doing just this and really did capture my attentions with the concept of Huns and unique abilities.

I can't stress enough that I loved the Hun world that was built in this book.  It was intelligent, creative and unique.  I was intrigued by this group of people that can recognize another Hun by not only a common mark that they all have but occasionally just by looking.  There is also teachings from their own legends, and little bits of their own language throughout. The only thing that took away from the experience for me was the constant "you will know when you are ready."  The more it happened the less I cared.  This being said it is not that it made me care less about the story but more it made me care less about the questions being asked.  There is a breaking point even for Ilona, and with it comes a lot of change.

I liked Ilona to start.  There is no doubt that she is strong and loving but she is always down on herself.  She is a successful woman but doesn't really see herself as a big deal, despite her young age and all that she has accomplished.   Although Ilona is a success, she is a private person.  Even the people around her know very little about her beyond the fact that she is a great doctor.  This does not however bother Ilona, and for the most part she is content with her life the way it is.  That is, she is content with everything except the fact that she can't get answers.  This inability, is the breaking point for the woman who seems to have endless calm.  I could really appreciate this character for this because I seriously sympathized.

The romance in this one confused me.  It is one of those reads where you are never quite sure if there is a triangle or not.  Bela has been her best friend fr years and though she is attracted to him and wishes there to be more he says they are just friends.  However, he seems like he wants more.  I believe if he was honest with her they would already be happy...but sadly he can't be and they are not.  Enter Zoltan.  He is definitely easy on the eyes and is also attracted to Ilona but they don't feel as easy as Bela and Ilona.  Sure they can talk and Ilona feels like she can talk to him but I can't shake the feeling that these two are just not meant to be.  Regardless, the romance does not play off like a high school drama and is executed well.

Foresight captured my attention and I will continue on with the next book, because the author has done such an outstanding job creating this unique world.  The ending had me sitting on the edge of my seat and there were a few twists and a cliff hanger at the end.  I honestly can't think of something to compare this read to but would recommend it to anyone looking for something fresh and fun.

About the Author

I love to read magical realism/fantasy stories. About two years ago, on a rainy afternoon, I wanted to snuggle up on the couch to read, but I didn’t have any new books.
I voiced my disappointment, while browsed my numerous bookshelves.
My daughter had enough after a while and said, “Mom, stop whining! If you don’t have a book to read, then write one.”
She surprised me with her statement, but I took her advice, sat down and started writing my Guarded Secrets series.

What happens when you uncover years of secrets and find out everything you thought to be true was a lie?

Drew Stevens finds her world turned upside down when her parents are brutally murdered. Soon after, she learns she inherited a property in Bar Harbor, Maine from recently deceased grandparents that she believed had died when she was a baby.
Drew travels north to settle her grandparents’ estate, but finds more questions than answers as the truth starts unraveling. What she didn’t expect to find was Saint, whose reputation was as tumultuous as his past. But the very thing that brought them together was the same thing that kept them emotionally caged. With Saint’s scars so deep and Drew’s so fresh, can the pair heal from their painful wounds or will they be pulled beneath the darkness of their pasts?

"Something was pulling me to Maine. I needed to touch the house, to be in the presence of this secret that my mom had withheld my whole life. I needed to connect Mom's tales to their source. I needed to feel closer to her. I hoped Maine would give me that.
So you know him, then? I asked. Saint? he laughed, sarcastic and filled with bitterness. We went to school together. he's a few years older than me. Our local celebrity--at least with the tourists. Girls go after him like he's got something they've never seen. With everyone else, he pretty much keeps to himself... nowadays, anyway.
No more leaving, no more slammed doors. For either of us. I want you, Drew, but I want you here. In Maine. No words came out of me. Just a soft, sweet sigh that sounded just like a moan. It probably was..my lungs had emptied; my muscles had tightened as his body pressed against mine. His eyes went to my lips, his thumb parted them. he licked his, teasing me, showing me what he was able to do. Tell me you want me, too.

I am a fast reader. Being a fast reader means sometimes I skip the parts where the story seems to detail too much just to get to the good part. With this book? That was not an option. Every line held my attention. Every page made me want more. Every twist and turn captivated me till I came to the climatic ending. This is my first book by Marni Mann but I will tell you something, it sure won't be my last. I can not wait to pick up more books by this author.

Drew just lost her parents in a vicious attack in their home in Florida. She was lost and wasn't looking for anything except time to mend her brokenness. Then she got a letter that said she inherited a house from her grandparents who were supposed to be dead according to what she knew anyway. So off she goes to Maine, the place her mom grew up but never talked about. She finds out much more than she bargained for and she learns some things that shape her into the new person she needs to become.

I really enjoyed this book. This story is told from Drew's perspective, but the other characters she encounters along the way play a significant role in the plot as well. Brady is the guy who is friendly to Drew right away. He quickly becomes someone she feels she can trust. His dad Shane is also a great guy and that's a good thing because they are the men doing the renevations on her grandparents house making it ready to sell. She immediately decides to make these changes to the house so she can cut ties in Maine and move back to her home in Florida. I mean she can't stay in a town she knows nothing about.

As the story unfolds, the reader is pulled in to Drew's thoughts and feelings as if you yourself were living it. It feels quite real. I just couldn't get over how well I related to this character.  The sadness and problems Drew went through captivated me. She seemed so lost and didn't have a friend to call her own. And then there is Saint. The tough rugged man who she meets on the pier who just does something to her everytime he speaks. But Saint is a big mystery. Brady can't stand him and her new friend Rae won't really say much, but Drew knows there is more to this man than meets the eye. She is determined to get inside his head and find out what makes him so quiet, withdrawn and angry with everyone. But why should it matter if she is leaving soon anyway?

This story was the perfect blend of romance, intrigue and emotion. I felt the author did a great job at getting into the story quickly and occupying the reader with an amazing cast of characters. I would recommend this new adult romance to anyone who enjoys a memorable story told in perfect detail.
