Where to get:
In the beginning...there were Vampire
Man’s fall from grace sparked the birth of the Dark creatures from the underworld. To counter the explicit threat to mankind, divinely-created immortals were brought forth. The Witch encompassed seven Castes of power; their magic was most effective against the nefarious agenda pursued by the evil ones.
She is Chosen...
Kaitriana’s gift of magic is unrivaled. A descendant of the most powerful Ancient in existence, her birth was foretold ages before her time. Destined to lead the Witch faction, she is betrayed by her own kind, destroying her birthright and all hope of delivering the Realm from the sinister shadow of the Ancient Dark.
He is the Key...
Lorcan is a mighty warlord in the Vampire species. His animosity towards the magical immortals is personal - his mother was their Queen. Having long since severed all ties with his former kin, his existence remains plagued by the repercussions of her treachery and a secret that threatens to be his downfall.
They are the Prophecy...
An arcane prophecy from the time of the Ancients proclaims that only two in all of creation can bring peace to the Realm. When Kaitriana miraculously appears seeking his protection, Lorcan must forsake his duty and disregard the dictates of his breed to shelter the female. Together they must combat the Ancient Dark and surmount the forces within their own factions that would oppose the Prophecy. Their fates have always been entwined and only when joined can they triumph over a blood feud that has shadowed the Light for millennia.
About the Ancients of Light series
Chosen is the first in the thirteen books of the Ancients of Light series and is only the beginning of a young Witch’s journey toward developing both the strength of character and magic that will be required to fulfill her prophesied role as leader of the Light faction.
Revelations of nuances in the Prophecy - facets that were never fully comprehended by the Ancients - will continue in successive stories. The culmination of its true meaning in the destiny of the supernatural world of the Realm will only be revealed when Kaitriana is adequately prepared to lead the Warriors now being called together to champion the Light’s purpose.
Familiar characters return for each story line as the focus turns to a new key couple in every book - a pair that significantly factors into the purpose of Light – however, the story of the Chosen does not end with Book #1. Kaitriana and Lorcan, their growth together as partners in leadership and in love as a couple, will thread through the series as Kaitriana assumes the role that was destined as hers since the beginning.
What were the influences you used in starting this book series?
I have always loved paranormal and science fiction. I also never met a superhero I did not like. Well, I never actually met one at all, but I did want to be Wonder Woman when I grew up – so I wanted to create strong female characters (mentally and physically).
I watched my first Vampire movie when I was six…we did not have parental controls back then…so I am afraid of the dark to this day from all those freaking scary movies but I also love love love Vampire lore.
What is the one thing that helps you the most in your writing process?
Alcohol and solitude. That makes me sound like I have all kinds of issues, doesn’t it??? Ha! Actually, running and music. I do not think I could write without those two things – they are critical to my creative process. The entire series began as a story that rambled in my head for about six months during my daily runs on the treadmill. It was a distraction to help me kill a few miles in the beginning. It turned into a 13 book endeavor with lots of imaginary friends.
What advice would you give an aspiring writer like myself?
I have only been doing this a short while myself, so keep that in mind…the learning curve is huge. It can be daunting and overwhelming…I learn something new every day and I am certain that will continue until I am no longer writing. I could write you pages on the things I have learned in the last 18 months, but I will stop rambling and give you two. First - write what you love to read not what you think will sell books. Second, have at least two novels (but three would be better) written before you publish the first - because when readers want more, they want more NOW! Of course, that is totally awesome, but it will also cause you to lose a lot of sleep keeping up with demand.
Do you have any music mixes you listened to while working on this series?
Yes! Nearly every scene (except for the intimate ones) plays out in my head while I am running on the treadmill and my music plays a huge part in that. My playlist will vary significantly depending on what part of the book I am working on that day. For Broken, my music list ran the gamut from artists with a more Christian/Inspirational leaning such as Thousand Foot Krutch (Be Somebody – an awesome song!!!) and Lifehouse to Lady Gaga, AC/DC and Marilyn Manson.
In Mistaken (Ancients of Light #4, coming out this spring), there is one particular song entitled Oceans by Hillsong United that is so tied up in a pivotal moment in the story that I was compelled to mention it in the book. Much of the remainder of my music for Mistaken has included a lot of Pink, Kelly Clarkson, a particular song by Selena Gomez (over and over and over), more AC/DC, some Metallica…and some others that I just will not ever admit to having on my iPod because you will totally poke fun at me.
Favorite book? (although I know for a true reader, it is very difficult to pick just one) :)
If you are going to be so cruel as to make me say only one…I will say Julie Garwoods’s The Bride. I discovered Garwood in my late teens, and I have read every book in her Medieval and Regency series at least five times.
Favorite author or influence for you?
I have two – I am soooo breaking the rules since you limited me to just one favorite book. Julie Garwood and Judith McNaught –both have had significant influence on my style. They write the most amazing historical romances and I have re-read their works countless times because I fall in love with their characters over and over again. I wanted to create those types of characters for my readers. Their books and their characters are also the reason that I wanted to create a series where my characters would carry over from one book to the next. McNaught and Garwood both do this and I have always loved when I continue to see old characters that I loved play a role in another book. I will have to say that Julie Garwood is my biggest influence for my female characters> Her historical heroines are awesome, hysterical, and endearing – though I do not think any of hers were ever so quirky as to be called La-la-la-Crazy.

Heather Fleener lives in Indiana with her husband, D.A. and their twins, Thomas and Alexandra. Professionally she has spent her career working in the area of Intellectual Property law. Reading has been a passion of hers since she was young and she has adored romance novels her entire life. The romantic styles of Judith McNaught and Julie Garwood are her inspiration, though she has read and loved the stories of countless other authors. Her fascination with the paranormal began to form at the young age of six, watching late-night ghost and vampire movies with her Grandpa. Unfortunately, as a result, she also remains afraid of the dark to this day.Combining her love of epic romances and the supernatural was a natural progression for her overactive imagination. When the idea for the Ancients of Light series began, it was an abstract story line rambling around in her head to help kill a few miles on the treadmill. As the stories and plot lines continued to grow, it finally became necessary to put the words to paper and build the characters that had been living in the Realm and having conversations in her head for months. The series is a testament to many miles on the treadmill and lots of characters that insist on having their stories told.
