Video Interview + Giveaway with Hiromi Goto, author of Half World and Darkest Light
I'm extremely honored and delighted to be joined today by the phenomenal Hiromi Goto, author of beautifully written and gorgeously imagined Ya fantasy books, Half World and Darkest Light.
I had the pleasure of reviewing both books on my blog just a couple of days ago, so be sure to check out my review posts to see just how absolutely amazed I was by Hiromi's imagination and writing skills!
Hiromi’s first novel, Chorus of Mushrooms (1994), received the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book in the Caribbean and Canada region and was co-winner of the Canada-Japan Book Award. Her short stories and poetry have been widely published in literary journals and anthologies. Her second novel, The Kappa Child (2001), was a finalist for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Regional Book, and was awarded the James Tiptree Jr. Memorial Award. Her first children’s novel, The Water of Possibility, was also published that year. Hopeful Monsters, a collection of short stories, was released in 2004. Her YA/Crossover novel, Half World (2009), was long-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and received the 2010 Sunburst Award and the Carl Brandon Society Parallax Award. Her long poem, co-written with David Bateman, came out in Fall 2009. Wait Until Late Afternoon is her first book-length poetry publication. Darkest Light, companion book to Half World, will be released in 2012 with Penguin Canada.

The author said that the interconnectedness that once existed among the worlds of flesh, spirit and purgatory is what she explores in her books. She said that at one time people could travel among these three. Her books explore this abililty and the fact that people can no longer do it. The interview revealed a very interesting person!
Those covers alone would have made me want to read her books, but wow, all the history and lore that went into the ideas is fascinating. I love books that explore Eastern mythology.
I really like the concept of the three worlds that were once joined together resulting in world harmony. It's not actually that far-out a concept if you think of how differently people would act on a daily basis if they spent more time thinking about their spiritual selves rather than the need to earn money to buy food to support their human bodies. Deep, huh? Thanks!
Thanks for the giveaway and interview! The books seem almost to have a metaphysical point, with the way she explained her inspiration. Impressive that Gaiman and de Lint gave quotes!
It's great the Hiromi wasn't too scared to not be able to finish her novels. They sound so very spooky, creepy, but interesting! they remind me so much of the foreign movie RECYCLED, and I loved that movie and I am eager to have a chance in delving into her books. I have always be infatuated in exploring the concept of purgatory and reading stories about it (Dantes inferno).. and her idea of the 3 worlds is just.... I dont know if theres even a word for it. and I do agree. our world even until this day is still violent, but Im really glad we're not in the era of medieval times. Ive watched history channel and man oh man lol.... great interview Evie!!
I loved the idea that she's trying to find an explanation of why there's so much violence in our history! Something I always wonder myself too! Great Interview! Kisses

I've heard quite a bit about these novels, but haven't really checked them out. The idea of three realms intrigues me, and I really like how the author focuses on the darker sides to our history.
I really liked the words that she used to describe the series. And now I'm really intrigued and curious to read those books! They look really intense. Thanks a lot for the interview and for the giveaway :)
