Interview + Giveaway: Suzy Turner, author of Raven

I'm very excited to be joined today by Suzy Turner, the author of the YA urban fantasy novel, Raven (the first in The Raven Saga). Suzy is a fantastic, sweet person and I hope you guys will enjoy this interview!

Guys, please give a warm welcome to Suzy!

E: Evie
ST: Suzy Turner

E: Welcome to Bookish Suzy! Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
ST: Thank you Evie, I'm delighted to be here!
I'm an English girl who has lived in Portugal for the past 25 years (I was 10 when we moved), I've been with my husband since I was 16. In fact we are about to celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary! We don't have any kids but we have four cats and two dogs.
E: Who or what inspired you to write Raven?
ST: It was a visit to Canada, actually! In late 2009 my husband, myself and two friends spent three weeks travelling around Alberta and British Columbia. We totally fell in love with everything about it - the people, the mountains, the small towns, the big cities, the lakes, ocean... everything! But it was while we were having a picnic on a beautiful little beach in Powell River that my imagination began to run riot. There were huge pieces of driftwood everywhere and fish kept hopping out of the water. It was the most beautiful and serene place yet it had such an air of mystery to it. I was completely taken aback and somewhere deep in my subconscious, the idea started to develop.
E: How would you describe your book in 5 words?
ST: Engaging YA urban fantasy mystery!
E: Which of your characters do you feel is most like you?
ST: Ooh... that's a tough one! I guess that would be Jo. And it's not because she's beautiful (!) but simply because she's so easy going and gets on with everybody. She likes to have a laugh
E: If your book was made into a movie who would you cast for it?
I actually gave this some thought recently and put it all down on my blog.
Lilly - Georgie Henley (from Chronicles of Narnia)
December - Chloe Moretz (from Let Me In)
Rose - Sally Field
Gabriel - Gabriel Byrne
Jo - Alexandra Daddario (she was in Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief)
Oliver - Colby Paul (he's had small roles in Supernatural, Pushing Daisies, etc)
Ben - Charlie Cox (from Stardust)
Serena - Famke Jansen (X Men)
Neleh - Michelle Ryan (The Bionic Woman & Eastenders)
          Vivian - Charlize Theron
Sammy Morton - Jensen Ackles (Supernatural)
E: Where is your favorite place for writing? Do you have any special writing rituals?
ST: I write all over the house! It depends on my mood, really. At the moment I'm sitting at the dining table but you can often find me trying to snuggle up on the sofa (but it's not easy balancing a laptop on your knee!). I love sitting outside to write but it's just too bright... I can't see the screen properly! No writing rituals, other than I have to have a cup of tea before I start in the morning.
E: What genres do you like to read in your free time?
ST: YA urban fantasy, chick lit, the occasional thriller/horror or historical fiction. I'm partial to pretty much anything.
E: Which of your favorite books would you recommend everybody to read?
STThe Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I read it at college and it was just incredible. I bought it again recently but haven't got round to reading it yet.
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett - it just blew me away!
The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel - truly inspiring.
E: What’s next in line for you, are you working on a new book now?
ST: I'm working on The Raven Saga Part II: December Moon. I'm about a third of the way through and I have to say, I'm pretty excited about it!
E: If you could have a dinner with three people/characters (real, imaginary, famous or not, even dead!) who would you choose?
ST: I would probably want to communicate with animals, especially cats and dogs because it bugs me when I don't understand what they want or when they don't understand what I want. 'Stop peeing on the carpet' for instance! (I have a puppy)
E: What are your biggest pet peeves?
1. I'm a couch potato
2. I have a belly button piercing
3. I chew my tongue when I'm deep in concentration
4. I'm totally useless at sports
5. I love country music
Random Questions:

- white or dark chocolate? (I'm lactose intolerant)
- coffee or tea? Rooibos tea in the morning, black decaf-coffee in the afternoon
- favorite fictional character? Luna Lovegood (I named my puppy after her)
- favorite movie? As a kid, Neverending Story and The Lost Boys. Now, Practical Magic
- favorite song? Oh, I have a few.... Neverending Story by Limahl, Together in Electric Dreams by Human League, Stay by Shakespeare's Sister, Cry Little Sister by Aiden (from The Lost Boys), American Honey and Need You Now by Lady Antebellum... sorry I got a bit carried away. There are so many!
- favorite TV show? Supernatural, Ghost Whisperer, Charmed..... (I <3 Supernatural!!! -Evie)
- Spring or Autumn Autumn
- ebook or printed copy?  (I'm a recent Kindle convert!)

Great interview. It's amazing how a place could have inspired this story. I recently got this on my kindle app and I can't wait to read it. I would love to be able to communicate with animals that would be awesome. Especially dogs and cats I love them most but any animal in general would be fun to talk to.
