Interview + Giveaway: Elizabeth Miles, author of Fury

Today is a super exciting day for me! Why? Because someone super special is stopping by Bookish to chat with me and answer some bookish questions! Ladies and Gentleman, the fabulous Elizabeth Miles is here to talk to us today! (*standing ovation*) And that's not everything! I will be giving away a copy of her hot debut novel, Fury!

Guys, please give a warm welcome to Elizabeth!

E: Evie
EM: Elizabeth Miles

E: Welcome to Bookish Elizabeth! Thanks so much for joining us today! I can only imagine how insanely busy you must be with the release of your fantastic book and all! Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to visit Bookish! Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
EM: I am thrilled to be here — thanks for the invitation! Well, as you know, I'm Elizabeth Miles, the author of Fury, which is the first book in a trilogy. I live in Portland, Maine, in an apartment with my wonderful boyfriend and two wonderful cats. I grew up in New York, and as an only child, books were my constant companions. I studied journalism at Boston University and when I'm not writing about paranormal Greek goddesses, I'm a reporter for a local alternative newspaper in Maine.
E: Who or what inspired you to write "Fury"?
EM: As you and your readers may or may not know, Lauren Oliver and I have been best friends since we were kids. She is obviously a great inspiration and was instrumental to my getting involved in the YA publishing world. That combined with my longstanding fascination with folklore and the horror genre...it all came together a little more than a year ago.
E: Do you mind telling us how long did it take for you to write it?
EM: The first draft took me about five months. All told, the complete revision process took about eight or nine.
E: How would you describe the "Fury" series in 5 words?
EM: Scary, creepy, real, sexy, evocative.
E: Greek mythology plays an important role in the story. Is it one of your passions or did you have to spend much time in research?
EM:Honestly, despite the fact that I've always been interested in Greek myth and drama, I didn't know anything about the Furies at first. My ex-boyfriend Will was the first person to explain who they were (appropriately enough). After that, I did research.
E: Your book is full of intriguing and vivid characters, which of them do you feel is most like you? Are any of your characters based on people in your own life?
EM: Thank you - what a great compliment. While Em and I are very different in lots of ways, she is also probably the most like me (except I try to make better decisions!). We're both bookish and, to different degrees, introverts. We share the bad habit of too often letting things happen TO us, rather than seizing the reins of our own lives. Over the course of the Fury series, I think Em will become more proactive -- just as I try to be in my daily life.
E: I would kill to see Fury being made into a movie! If that was to happen and you could pick the cast yourself, who would you chose?
EM: We might have some good news in that category sooner than later...(hint, hint). I think Emma Roberts could pull off Ty. Dakota and Elle Fanning are both really impressive and I would love to see them in the Fury world. Could Emma Watson play Em? What about Chase...Someone hot, but they have to have some mean intelligence behind their eyes. And for JD - it would be so hard. JD is so wonderful. I keep seeing this guy Brett DelBuono - what do you guys think of him for JD?
E:  Where is your favorite place for writing? Do you have any special writing rituals?
EM:  I write in my bed a lot. BUT! My boyfriend is a talented carpenter and he’s in the process of making me a desk out of walnut wood. It is sure to be one of my prized possessions and my new favorite writing space. In terms of rituals, not really. I’m neurotic enough without rituals. :)
E: What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are interested in writing YA novels?
EM: The other day, on Twitter, author Maureen Johnson (The Last Little Blue Envelope, Girl at Sea, Devilish, among others) suggested that people who have limited publishing experience shouldn’t be giving out writing or publishing advice. I tend to agree with her. That said, the one piece of advice that I think applies to everyone, in every field, is: work hard. You know what that means for you. Don’t be insane. Don’t let work consume you. But do what you want to do, and do it often, and try to do it as well as you can.
E: What genres do you like to read in your free time?
EM: All of them. Really, I’m prettty non-discriminating and tend to switch genres frequently.
E: Which of your favorite books would you recommend everybody to read?
EM: I think Ender’s Game, by Orsen Scott Card, is a fun, exciting, accessible read that most people can/will enjoy. Also I liked it so much that I named my cats after the two main characters in that book.
E: What's next in line for you? Are you working on a new book now? When can we expect to see the sequel to Fury?
EM: I am currently revising the sequel of Fury, which is called Envy. It follows some of the same characters from the first book and introduces some new ones. It reaches a whole new level of creepiness!
E: If you could be a Greek goddess, who would you be and why?
EM: Great question. I think I’ll go with Artemis, the Goddess of the Hunt. She was an independent woman and a protector of her kind, who loved the wilderness and had a certain intensity about her.
Random Questions:

- white or dark chocolate? Dark, no doubt.
- coffee or tea? Coffee, and lots of it please.
- guilty pleasure? I’ll give you my top five: sleeping late, Josh Turner, ice cream (like a whole pint), reality TV, and movie theater popcorn. I indulge only one of these one a regular basis (guess which one).
- favorite movie? Of all time? Probably Little Women (the Winona Ryder version), The Sound of Music, The Little Mermaid, or The Wizard of Oz. My movie list is SO girly!!
- ebook or printed copy?  I’ve actually never read an e-book, so I can’t say!

Elizabeth, thank you so much for joining us today!
I'm looking forward to reading and reviewing your next books!
(DYING to read Envy!!!)

Fury by Elizabeth Miles
Expected publication: August 30th 2011 by Simon Pulse

     Sometimes sorry isn't enough....
It’s winter break in Ascension, Maine. The snow is falling and everything looks pristine and peaceful. But not all is as it seems...
Between cozy traditions and parties with her friends, Emily loves the holidays. And this year’s even better--the guy she’s been into for months is finally noticing her. But Em knows if she starts things with him, there’s no turning back. Because his girlfriend is Em’s best friend.
On the other side of town, Chase is having problems of his own. The stress of his home life is starting to take its toll, and his social life is unraveling. But that’s nothing compared to what’s really haunting him. Chase has done something cruel...something the perfect guy he pretends to be would never do. And it’s only a matter of time before he’s exposed.
In Ascension, mistakes can be deadly. And three girls—three beautiful, mysterious girls—are here to choose who will pay.
Em and Chase have been chosen.
